Comfy old boots bike service resto thread

Question.

Can I bring the bike to TDC using the shaft alone? I kinda know the answer - no! I need the rear wheel on to get the torque to move the pistons right? As in 6th gear? Could I advance it using the alternator bolt under the front cover? I seem to remember doing that on my 1150. Be a much better use of my time tomorrow if I could get the valves checked etc? Thankyou.

Take the plastic cover off the front of the engine, then use the nut on the crankshaft pulley to turn the engine.

Good man thanks. I was hoping it was still the same. I’ve made myself a tool to put in the back of the right cylinder head to hold it in the right spot. If the valves are in spec I’m not touching them.

wondering about my new to me first get gs 911

Rearding the brake disk bobbins. Looking at the two that are 'welded in', is it just that one of the tiny thin washers has slipped?

Can anyone take pity on me and let me know what these washers are so I can buy some new ones? The rest seems ok. An hour of tlc will have them looking much better and ready to go again but I was reading that these bolts expand or something and need to be replaced? I've heard reports of some reusing them?

Anyway I can't find reference to the washers on the max Bmw parts fiche and I think I'm tired now but would like to add them to the list of bits I'll get off the Bmw parts department. Thanks.

I, for one, am enjoying this. Well done (it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as I thought it might, once you'd used the slide hammer to get that pesky part out)

Good to have you on board! To say I’m relieved is an understatement!

Advice please. The brake disk bolt bobbins. They have three washers. A wavy one each side of a thicker steel one. I missing five of the wavey ones. Do they start out wavey? Or is that caused by the hole in the disk being oval? Need five more but advice appreciated

USB Yellow GS911 will be adequate and so will windows XP.
No need to connect to the internet Just make sure there is room for another VIN number to use on it , It only has 10 VIN number slots when new unless it is upgraded to the pro version.
If the battery life is poor on the laptop jus plug it into the mains.

The washers start out wavy

in contact with the hex tech support. Error 400. Laptop didn't come with a charger so trying to track on of those down... They are suggesting trying another laptop. No hope of that. In the mean time I've gotta find a charger.

Dropped the wheels off to get new tires. Had great chats with the lad down there and got a number of a great powder coater, so who knows what I might get done going forward. The wheels are pealing badly but they will do for the moment and I'd like to get the luggage racks powder coated too.

Really not in the mood for wrenching today. Herself is away Thursday and Friday so I think I'll just leave it until then and bust through the rest of it.

Got the Gs 911 up and running. No fault codes except for the following:

Maybe I wired the rear wheel speed sensor back to front?
Pump motor defective - ah crap on a cracker
Power supply to pump motor faulty? Could the rest be due to this? Anyone got any info? This suggests the pump is in technical terms, fecked?!

3 fault codes found:

23968Rear Wheel Speed Sensor : No Signal (electrical fault)
The fault is currently present.
24048Pump motor defective
The fault is currently present.
24049Power Supply to Pump motor faulty
The fault is currently present.

Obviously made a pigs ear of the brake bleed. Lever is spongy and I can hear a squish noise under the tank 😞

I’ll buy more fluid and do the old fashioned manual method. Any tips? I’m very comfortable do the bearings on the final drive and checking the valves but balancing the throttle bodies dnd bleeding brakes make me a little unconfident.

So is the pump motor defective because it’s not getting power or does the gs911 know it’s fecked? Is the power supply to the pump motor part of the abs or is that an electrical issue elsewhere I could chase? Or is the power supply to pump motor and the defective pump motor defective the same thing? The power supply to the pump motor is the brushes? Think I’ll be trawling the old threads to get my head around this.

I’ll settle for working brakes. No idea if I’ve made a mess of the rear circuit yet. No rear wheel to attach fir obviously reasons 😂😂

Have you got the ignition turned on when you're bleeding the abs pump with the GS911?
From memory, I just bled them normally and then ran a cycle front and back through the GS911 with the bleed valves closed.

Leaving aside the brakes don’t work, the front end looks much cleaner. I’ve Thursday and Friday to finish this off. Herself off away so I don’t have to pretend to be interested in anything else lol

I'm running gs-911 legacy version 2301.1 data pack vs 15.1

I am a bit disappointed. I thought I was going to be able to activate the abs and do stuff to set the idle some thing something? Am I missing something? if this is all the gs911 does, well, it's certainly not what I expected.

The abs has been dead for over five years. I bled the brakes using a cheap vacuum brake pump. There were lots of bubbles. I'm sure operator error was involved. I thought I was doing so well. I just happened to get the gs 911 today and I got new tires for the wheels, so today was the first time I had the wheels back on since I bled the brakes.
