Considering a GS....read this

At the end of the day its 'whatever floats your boat' where a bike is concerned... To me the GS ticks more boxes than every other bike I've owned ( more than 50) and it suits me for what I want to use it for...

One of the things I don't plan on using it for is stuffing it under an R1 piloted by a club racer at a track day......and then tell everyone about it......

Got out of that mindset around 14 years of age :augie

What I do like is the fact the GS will carry me, a pillion and luggage for 10 days around europe, without aches and pains ( apart from the seat which is crap.. 150 miles today and I feel like I've been violated :rob)

Spot on...especially the last paragraph :thumb

Oh, and I've changed the seat too for the same reason...much better now.. ;)

Bloody hell! you were doing trackdays at 14?? sounds like some of the "power-rangers" touched a nerve here pal, listen, this forum is full of these stories about "showing the sports bikes the way" ......go on some of the sports bike forums, you'll not find any mention of us doing that to GS's, cos we dont give a shit, thats for the tiny penis brigade...

Its because of those members on here gobbing off that these points have been raised, otherwise we wouldn't have wasted our time defending ourselves....and yes, i ride a GS now also, as well as my R1.....snooooooozzzzzee:bow

FFS just get on with riding your bikes and enjoy yourselves.

How boring is it listening to folk drone on and on about how superbly qualified they are at riding and how they can 'surprise' sportsbike riders.

Who gives a fik?

Well put ;)

Don't need to prove anything :rob

Think you've got me wrong there ;) as I said it's whatever floats your boat.. me... got fed up of back ache, thrashing around at silly speeds to take the weight off my wrists, high insurance premiums, no luggage capacity, 3000 miles max on tyres, and getting off the bike in one piece leathers and walking around like a gorilla

A good rider on a sports bike would whup a good rider on a GS around the track.. so what? never said it'd be anything different...

no nerves touched .... I'm in touch with my 'bikeuality' and happy with it:ymca

my hero:thumb2

Ah yes, I love sport bikes too! I fondly remember the exhilarating performance of my BSA A10 Super Rocket....:rob
Nowadays? Well, I never sort of managed to arrange my 6'8" on a modern sports bike, so i ran out of choices, in a way. Not that arthritis helped much, either. To top it off, my good lady said she'd feel indecently exposed riding pillion on one of those...:toungincheek
So there I am, trundling around on my GS, missus on the pilllion, and having a jolly good time. As by miracle, all the horribly bad roads in Norway have become so much smoother. Politicians are taking the credit, but I give it to the GS suspension, slightly enhanced by a certain Swedish company.
Sport bikes? Beautiful machines. Love to race one of them some time. Cape of Good Hope and back be all right, sir?:augie

And the configuration of a GS is So good thats why it wins the tt every year regardless of the rider and obviously that would be why they are so widely used in Moto-GP ...............................No wait a minute ..................
Its the usual ramblings of fat geriatrics who can no longer ride sports bikes because of there own failings

So you like your new bike .

Brilliant :thumb

But why does that all of a sudden make everyone elses choice Sh1te???

And yes I think the GS is a great bike as are many others . Including Sports bikes .

Hahahahahaha...!!! :rob

I don't get it. We either have a forum full of ex GP and WSB champions riding GS's at speeds and lean angles boardering the impossible or the world is full of sportsbike riders who have never ridden more than 1 mile before being passed by a GS rider. Don't get me wrong, I was a sportsbike rider of limited ability and now a GS rider of the same ilk but if a GS can outperform a sporstbike on the twisties why don't they feature at the front of the grid in nationl championships on short twisty race cources where there is not a long straight for the sportsbikes to catch up but lots of corners where the GS can leave them all standing?

It's 'cos lots of people talk pish!:D And for some reason feel they have to justify their choice of bike. It's the nature of some humans...:rob

Anyway their bikes are faster and better and smarter and more fashionable than yours, and whatever you're riding they'll be able to go faster for longer and ride much more safely. 'Cos they've read a manual and have lots of secret knowledge. Which they will share with you if asked.

What oil do you use, and what's the best tent to buy? Are tarps really as good as some people claim? How about HID lights? Some folk on this forum know the answers to these questions. But please don't ask....:banghead:

Bloke on the GS is a Bully!
Hes in the wrong group, and taking the video to big himself up just proves it!
(Why would anyone video that anyway? What is he trying to prove by postig it?)
The other kids are wobbling, off line and just learning, no matter what bike they are on.

The GS inspires a lot of confidence that a sportsbike does not around our twisty roads. It has very forgiving suspension and brakes, VERY good vision and a very soft and manageable power delivery giving you way more confidence making it far easier to ride fast.

That video's implying that a GS will beat a sportsbike on a track. Dont make me laugh!!!

PS, if you think a GS is fast around tight twisty roads, try a Megamoto and leave them for dead;)
(Mines for sale did I mention:aidan)

Yeh with most, but not the Megamoto. Its a very roomy bike.
250 miles is fine then after that you need an airhawk.
We did a 1000 miles stint in July, possible with the airhawk.

how far? How long?

Everyone will have their own idea. personally I have found that 500 miles in a day is enough; On the autoroutes that is going to mean about 7 hours in the saddle; I have done it a few times on an R100RS (which dates me!) and I think I could do the same on a 1200GS - if i were 25 years younger: I am not too sure how you classify a 'megamoto.'

hello

I have my sports bike, and also my GSA, but have to say - on the sports model - I need smooth and and good roads

Yousa,

Theres a lot of willy waving going on here!! I have to say that boasting and bragging aout ones own perceived abilities is a very dangerous game! and is sure to end with egg on faces!
There is such a world of varients out there; Open fast roads, tight nadgery B roads, race tracks, new riders, experianced riders, weekend club racers, sports bikes, touring bikes, tall rounders .... its a melting pot, and there are no black and white answers.

I live in kent, the south east tip, for example, is a wash with marshland. Flat but tight twisty B roads. Real supermoto country. A good rider on a 690 superduke would be in heaven and would leave any other capable bike and rider for dead.
Then there are roads like the A2070 - Ashford towards Rye, a very fast open smooth road. 130's, 140's 150's on a litre sports bike?? Easy! Don't even have to be clever to do it.
I'm a reasonably capable rider; I spend my working day on a blue and yellow RT with blue lights and two tones!!! I'm a track day enthusiast, ex bike instructor, ex dispatch rider ..... I AM A PETROL HEAD!!! but boy, there are 101 riders out there a darn site quicker than me, and for a whole host of different reasons!! (including a sense of imortality!!)
So chill out Guys, learn to love your motorcycling community! its a multi cultural world of different skills, styles, bikes, riders and road types. I for one, don't really give a sh1t if I can do a sports bike round a bend, or get done by one myself!!

I have to agree with the above, there's always someone quicker in the right or wrong conditions. The main part is to enjoy your own experiences while doing your best to keep things rubber side down. I have owned Three Blades, 1 Cbr 6, Cb1300, Xt 600 and I currently have both a C90 and a 1200 Gs in the garage. There are things I love about all of them, and things I dislike about all of them. The point of this set of threads should surely be to give information to the person considering buying a GS or GSA! With this in mind I will say on GS ownership: My current GS is an awesome bike, and is the best bike I have ever owned. It will not keep with an inline 4 as silly speeds in a straight line, but when the going gets twisty it won't let you down. It will do this while fully loaded with panniers etc and is all day comfortable. The GS riding experience has to be sampled by anyone thinking of diving in, and I think you will be impressed. I did say that there were things I disliked: The only thing with a GS is it lacks the lunacy and silly speed capability. Maybe I am growing up, but I miss that less the longer I ride the GS.

Well this thread made me chuckle a bit.

I'm actually going back to a GS deliberately to slow myself down a tad and not to run with sports bikes.

With my current K1200GT SE I'm just spending far too much time commuting at speeds that are not sustainable for oh so many reasons. This is why I'm getting through brake pads, tyres and fuel way too fast (regularly about 40mpg).

One of the problems with tourers and sports tourers is that the fairings take enough of the strain so that you can easily use what they've got.

Whilst I'm having oodles of fun it's time to chill a bit so I'm going back to a boxer and back to a GS. A new 30 years GSA is on order ready for September.
