Corrosion etc on WC

Seems that there are a lot of issues with the WC GS about corrosion , is this the same for the WC GSA or have BMW sorted things out for this model .

I had bad corrosion on a k1200s and a 58 plate 1200gs. it's not unique to the wc!!!
I havent seen many bad pre 1200's though. My r1100s lasted several bad winters and came up shining like new. All the bikes I've had post that era have corroded.
I will add though that my gsxr suzuki after 1 year looked like it it was ready for scrapping!

All the bits that corrode on the GS they've painted black on the GSA, so you shouldn't be able to notice as easily!:augie:D

Exactly ,Thanks for that,in any case how could it happen in such a short period of time !!

Given I only rode it in the dry and washed it once with Johnson's No Tears baby shampoo, it is highly unlikely to be caused by caustic washing compounds - :blast

Does that mean that if you buy a four month old BMW Car or Bike, and the Engine blows up with under 4,000 miles on the clock, that they can say,'Sorry Sir the Price you paid reflected the overall condition on the day you purchased it '

Some things you can see, others you can't ! Im sure if a car started to rot it would be a different kettle of fish !!

Oh dear ....... Their answer to this will be and I quote "the price you paid for the bike reflected the overall condition on the day you purchased it"

They've got you by the bollocks. Probably best that you hope they don't squeeze them too hard :blast

That's two different things ......... one is corrosion and the other is mechanical. Both are covered under the manufacturers warranty and as you brought the subject up the corrosion warranty (on a car) is for perforation. In other words the body has to perforate from the inside out and they just don't do that nowadays.

Your corrosion is external. Just like if you were complaining to a dealer about corrosion on car bonnet caused by a stone chip. In the car world they just will not cover that kind of claim

You haven't bought a brand new vehicle but you did buy it knowing that it had faults. These faults may have been caused by the previous keeper? These fault may be a manufacturing defect that the manufacturer might deem as being unacceptable in a nearly new product? However, they may also quote "the price you paid reflected the condition at the time of purchase and that you knowingly accepted the vehicle with these faults" :blagblah

I hope your dealer stands by you and fights your corner which is what they should do :thumb2

OK so two different things in theory, however just because I bought it second hand should the warranty not stand ??
As one can see from other posts on here I'm not the only one thats having this problem am I ?
Others have had success with warranty claims why shouldn't I ?

Don't get me wrong, the bubbling isn't terrible by any means but its not going to get better as time marches on,if its like it is after 4000 miles whats it going to be like after 8,000 or 12,000 !!
I've owned two 1200 GSA's,the first a 2009 which I chopped in for a new 2011 model, both had done over 25,000 miles and neither had corrosion, believe it or not, even on the front of the engine where a lot seem to suffer.:thumb2
I love the bike and am not after owt for nowt,as they say up north, just a fair deal.
Anyway, this is all conjecture at the moment,we'll wait and see what happens before I get upset about it ! :beerjug:

By the way,the price I paid wasn't for a bike with faults,it wasn't cheap !!!!

I'm on your side ........... I have an 06 GSA. I've had it from new. It's now done 50k in all weathers. It regularly gets doused in FS365 and it has no corrosion whatsoever apart from the two cap head bolts that hold the headlamp grille in place and they were supplied by Touratech

I have a mate who has a 13my GS TE. He's also had it from new. It's now done 4000 miles. He had it coated in ACF50 the week after he got it. Last week he went to have a new tyre fitted and found corrosion on the rear hub and spoke nipples. He's also got corrosion to the front of the engine. He's not happy bunny :blast

Your machine comes with a 2x year warranty transferable to however many owners. Wether bought private, dealer or anywhere else. Pretty simple really.

Unfortunately these bikes seem to need a bit more attention than previous models, I'm anal with cleaning & acf50 & WD40 use in all those hard to get at places, (do a really good deep clean every 6 weeks as like to get those caked on insects off my bike)

However, I've just had my rear wheel replaced, & I have a few other bits popping into view, although the engine seems ok, I regurly spray WD40 on the exhausts & engine parts & it's working for me...
Good luck with your claim, I would expect a used BMW to be faultless & have quality paintwork as per reputation gained in the past, if they arn't careful they'll quickly lose this valuable reason to buy a BMW

As news goes, that's terrible!:P

What's the verdict then?
