1200GS WC TE is about 12 months old, covered 9k miles and always garaged. Had 5 warranty calls and 1 recall. However have noticed corrosion on drive shaft where the rear mud guard is fitted. I have little doubt that this will be covered by the manufacturer warranty.
However we are all aware of many other corrosion issues in particular to the engine.

Emailed BMW customer services to understand if I have any recourse regarding further corrosion once the warranty has expired.

Received a telephone call today and was advised politely that once the warranty expires then i am on my own. However i could extend the warranty. They would not confirm if corrosion is covered. I suspect not!

I am sure the trolls and R-soles will take the piss but imagine that at month 30 your bike is is corroded and scabby, resale value will be affected! I am personally not to bothered about resale as wish to keep the bike for 10 years.

You must be pissed because it won't last 10 yrs especially if you have corrosion now, can you imagine what it will look like in 3 yrs !!

Yep extended warranty does not cove corrosion.

:)

Rode my brand new gsa 90 miles to the dealer last week for its 600 mile service on utterly shitty roads, covered in farm and quarry mud and it was pissing down , so of course when it got there it was minging dirty, after the service it was pointed out that it had been noted on the job sheet that the bike was very dirty and that it was advised to clean the bike as it could affect future warranty claims regarding corrosion problems..

NOT A HAPPY BUNNY

Have a word with your dealer my local one North Oxford Garage complimentrty valet your bike when serviced if you want it done.

Not the point, if in the next 2 years I have a warranty claim for corrosion related matters no doubt it will be pointed out that it came into a dealership for a service and it was dirty

It's an off road capable bike, not sure they would want the publicity off a failed warranty claim due to their great off road bike being dirty.

Neil, you are indeed correct. when my bike went to the dealers they took photographs to send to BMW - now awaiting authorisation. The dealer advised they took pics of the whole bike to show the bike was clean and looked after. Apparently if you leave your bike dirty and outside for periods of time, warranty claims not be honoured.

Been thinking a lot about corrosion, it must occur because the paint lifts and moisture enters.... if it lasts two years with out corrosion then one maybe able to presume that the paint has bonded correctly and corrosion is very unlikely?

Any experts have any thought regarding this?

I'd be interested to know who wrote what and where?

If it was printed on your receipt then that could be a potential issue as it will be recorded on the dealers database

If it was hand written on the job card by the servicing technician then that's a different matter all together

Did they valet the bike after the service?

Not on my copy but it was written on the job sheet by the technician which went I presume with the dealers records, declined a valet as I had another 90 miles or so to ride home in the same crappy conditions, problem is that it now recorded whether it be on a job card or transferred onto computer records.

I can't see why there should be a worry re corrosion on a bike with 600 miles on the clock ..

More pissed off because I look after my bikes, my old 1150 was immaculate after 12 years and my 3 year old gsa is cleaner than any of the dealers own used stock

I wouldn't worry if I were you .... It's well documented that the latest GS's have iffy paint/powder coat. If you spot any corrosion (however small) I would suggest you photograph it and advise the dealer asap just to cover your back :thumby:

There's a disclaimer on the back page of the manual thats states under no circumstances should the bike be used in poor weather conditions and should only be washed using distilled water.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. My bike is under 1 year old and pretty immaculate as I'm a bit of a nerd about garaging, washing and applying ACF-50. I have been offered new engine, gearbox and driveshaft to replace the corroded parts but I'm also in a "discussion" with BMW customer support about what happens if the new parts corrode within a year - or just outside my warranty period.

Before the usual slagging starts.... I love my bike, and yes I actually ride it, no it doesn't just go to Tescos on a Saturday, etc. However - I think a £14k bike should not be corroding within a matter of months.

I had a 1992 CBR600 before I moved to my 1st GS and it never rusted despite being ridden through NI winters and left out in the rain (before I owned a garage) .

Tbh i think its appalling there should be no signs of corrosion of any kind, and your right once its 2 yrs old you will be fooked, BMW no theres issues with the bike, they should extend the warranty to include corrosion and not just bury there heads in the sand, you paid £14k to ride a time bomb.

Nothing like having confidence in your 'Product', eh, BMW? :blast

'Built to Explore' it says; just not too many muddy roads, ok?

And don't stray too far from a jetwash :augie

Why don't you tell them that you want a new bike with a BMW UK & Dealer contribution thrown in?

They're likely to get it right sooner or later

I'm having my 2008 hexhead extensively powder coated due to corrosion. But saying that (excluding wire wheel hubs) the alloy parts have been very good.

Some parts are inevitably corroding at gasket joints. To help them survive another 6 years I'm brushing along each joint with etch primer followed by clear laquer.

Who knows if this will make much difference. But can't do any harm.
