Anybody else gone through anything similar ?

My old boss at work.

He ordered a brand new Volvo Estate car, the same as the thing that won the Touring Car championship, with some extra work done on the engine etc etc. Quite a quick car, really.

Anyway, there was a waiting list of several months.... The Volvo dealership in Bslham called him: "Good news... And um, errr... bad news, sir". The good news is that the car had arrived at last, the bad news is that a brick wall at the dealership's compound had collapsed on it, writing the vehicle off.

Shite happens, you'll live. He did.

I guess legally there is nothing wrong with selling it as a new bike. The dealer could have kept quiet and fixed it...

However they seem honest so my guess it will be a demo bike then sold as used.

Almost agonising....but not as agonising as a pal of mine who bought one of the first Honda Firelblades in the country a few years back. It was parked on the forecourt, all shiny and new....he goes into the dealer, hands over the bakers draft (no electronic transfer in them days) and signs on the dotted line.

Before he can make it out of the door we hear an almighty crash as the Honda van delivering another Blade backs into it. It didn't just knock it over, it went under the truck....a complete mess.

Mate says....right, I will have the one on the van.

Dealer says (quite rightly)....what a shame....let me know how you get on with the insurance claim!!

Bike was repaired but never the same to him...always some one worse off.

Here's an example from across the pond, $4600 to repair a dropped (off its sidestand) 1150.

Don't knock it. in 2007, I shipped my 1100GS out to the US and the dockers dropped it in the port as they rode it off the boat. Bit of a shock when I got to Baltimore to be greeted by "Oh, you have come for the wrecked bike"

Anyway, I straightened it up to make it rideable, rode it to the nearest dealer and got them to quote on the damage. It was around $5000 ish and I sent the quote to the shipping company who promptly paid that into my account.

I spent a day straightening stuff on the old girl out and rode it for 3 years and about 40,000 miles without replacing anything.

That 5k paid for that trip nicely

I'm aware of a local ****a dealership who did a similar thing a number years ago with a brand new Fireblade, except they repaired it with a mixture of new and used parts (from bikes waiting to be written off or repaired ) and forgot to tell the customer.
They got caught out because someone in the trade told the customer on the quiet who turned up to pick up the bike fully aware of what had happened

Why ?

It wasn't his accident & he wasn't there at the time, so nothing to do with him

Just because I've heard various garages spin all sorts of *****. short test test, diesel and a police witness. If they are sorting out the fall out properly fine, but I find this story very neat.

It does happen .... I had two policeman witness me crash my old R100RS in to the police station roundabout in Woodley, Reading at 2am one freezing cold Sunday morning back in January 1982

I can have any bike until the new one turns up. They will pay my insurance cancellation fee, free 1st service, free delivery to my home address. I popped in today and they gave me a tourshell jacket and a pair of gs dry gloves. Yes it's a pain having to wait for another 2 months but I can't get angry over some poor sods accident, we've all had them. The only finance handed over was the deposit so that's not really an issue. The ace up my sleeve is the bike is registered on a cherished number so I would know if it was repaired. Again, not an issue as they have confirmed it will be a brand new replacement. I'm happy with that.

Won't there be an insurance marker against your private plate if they claim on their insurance or are they re-registering the bike before claiming?

They should definitely provide you with a decent loan bike until your new replacement turns up, they would certainly do this at a BMW car dealer
