Looking into maybe having a trip to Croatia next year and heard lots of good things especially would like to do the coastal road. Any tips places to stay would be great thanks. Maybe where to start in Croatia accommodation etc. I thought maybe a week down there.

Cheers Doc

You’re gonna need 3 weeks from Rotterdam to do it justice
Slovenia is also good, after doing the Dolomites on the way down

Hadn't really thought of anywhere else to visit whilst down there tbh Johnny. Did think about three weeks though as its a fair slog to get down there.

Doc, start by putting your house and Zagreb (the capital of Croatia) into Google maps and asking it for a route. This will give you the basics (distance and nonstop time) of how to get there and back.

Then work out how long you’d plan to in Croatia for.

Add A (outwards) to B (time spent in Croatia) to C (return) to give yourself a pretty reasonable guide as to the lowest period of time you’ll need to be away. Then add in any days off on the way down or coming back.

Well, unless you are flying in?
Then you’ll pass the
Black Forest
Austrian Tyrol
Italian Dolomites
Slovenia Tyrol and Coast

On the way there 👍🤩

Here in Croatia atm. We went straight through Holland, Germany and Austria to the Dolomites then downt to Trieste in four days, the first two slabbing it on motorways. So with the return journey you're looking at at least a week there and back. We went north from Trieste to near Bled in the Julian alps of Slovenia (like harirpins, gonna need to) before dipping back down to the coast at Rovinj. It's all very lovely, but by gum there was some traffic in the Tyrol and the Dolomites. Try to get another week off work!

We're making our way to Turkey now, it's all grand.

We did the coast road in April 1991 -very hard to find hotels, weather was appalling. Spectacular route though, don’t miss out Montenegro around Zadar.

Did it last year in October from Dubrovnik northwards in the camper. weather was really good. They have signs all over the place saying ‘challenging road for motorcycles’ and lots of German tour groups. Sadly, we came across several serious accidents (mostly bikes meeting armco)

@Doc I’ve just plotted a route to Istanbul and for Croatia via the Chunnel It was Lille, Nancy, Arabba (inc Stelvio) Verduz, Trieste Muggia and Split. I was moving on but you can make it up from there.

So France, Switzerland, Italy, Lichtenstein, Slovenia and Croatia.

Thanks lads lots to look into.

Where did you start @stever1 on the coast road.
I'll await a witty reply the beginning.
At Lidl in Matulji. My plan was to follow the 8 all the way down the Adriatic to Greece. There was only one area we didn’t do that due to roadworks.
Incidentally, we went on the Hull ferry, then overnighted in Höfingen at schloss hofingen ( https://www.booking.com/Share-4nhtJQ )
After a day on the autobahn to save time. It’s an interesting castle. Only old buildings amongst new stuff. Apparently the only building in the area not bombed.
2nd night at maltatal in Austria. ( https://hochalmspitze.com/en/home-en/ ) . It’s a predominantly biker hotel , has underground parking and does BBEM AND sells beer ( not certain about puffs wine though)
This led to night 3 being at Karlobag. The hotel room was great. Large room with parque flooring and classic wooden furniture, very nice.
I’m thinking it may be better for you to take 4 days to get to Karlobag to allow more time for afternoon sustenance ( beer ) 😀

Chris, try to get yourself a September ‘25 issues of Ride Magazine. There is a road trip write up, complete with information you are seeking.

But to start you off, here are screenshots from the magazine. My apologies if these are a bit small to read.

Kotor not Zadar which is in Croatia

Currently in Split, a lovely place. Trip so far is Ijmuiden, Limburg and der Lahn, Fussen, Arraba, Tolmin, Senj. The Jadranska Magistrala is either a delight,or a nightmare depending on the traffic, just like the Dolomites were this year. Inland road from Knin to Sinj is a joy, virtually no traffic. On a previous trip I also stopped in Karlobag, and then Mostar, before finishing up at Kotor. Dubrovnik for me was too touristy, still worth a stop. If you end up going to Mostar, go through Imotski and have a look at the Red and Blue lakes, truly stunning. Sibenik, Pula and Zadar all worth a stop over https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Lake_(Croatia)
