one thing people underestimate is the time it takes to get the near 400 miles from the Slovenian border to Dubrovnik via the coastal rode due to traffic and the twisty nature of the road. Just be realistic about timescales. Personally I would allow 5 days to get there, similar on the way back to make that part of the holiday not a slog over 2 days. Then decide how far to explore the coast. Many go to Split and then go inland for a bit to explore mountains and lakes before heading north again. Others head to Dubrovnik to tick the Game of Thrones box.
Croatia is now in the EU, Schengen and uses the Euro since the only time I visited a while ago. We stayed 3 nights in Opatija on the Istrian Peninsula. A very nice town with an Austrian Riviera vibe as it was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire where the wealthy went from landlocked Austria for their seaside jollies.
The Plitvice Lakes National Park is worth visiting. Pula, with Roman history was nice too.

Croatia only gets interesting when you stay away from the coast, explore the area close to the border with Bosnia / Herzegovinia..few tourists, lovely roads and scenery.
Pick up the small roads from say, Sinj to Knin, Korenica..and then Plitvička National Park..or in reverse.

Personally I love the Dolomites and have found accommodation to be reasonable in summertime

Doc, given that it’s a pretty decent schlep from Yorkshire to Croatia, have you thought about a fly / rent holiday?
I’d have thought that be a better idea, quicker to get there and back, spend more time doing stuff or chilling out there.
Then I again, the bike will not be a Harley or an Indian, it is most certainly not going to be black and suspension will awful. I may have forgotten to add something else.
I’d say, that R1250 RT is a known quantity to both Doc and Jayne, as is a K1600. Hire that for two weeks and have a good holiday without 10 day schlep there and back.

If that’s a no go suggestion. I found these suggestions of routes down and back. They start from Calais but would be easy to amend to start / end in Rotterdam. What they do show is that Croatia is roughly 1,000 miles away from the north east coast of France. Unusually, I didn’t take a note of where I’d lifted them from; so apologies where due.

Yes Richard I was thinking flying would be easier. At least a three night stop on the way down from Rotterdam. We have no interest in doing massive mileage days. Suppose once there we could do the coast and make our way back up a scenic route and just book on the day as we decide.

Went as far as Albania earlier in the year with Ferry across to Italy and back up you need a good month, don't miss Slovenia amazing roads and scenery Croatia the same and Bosnia is a great place to visit people all so friendly, memorable places Slovenia. Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Croatia. Plitvice National Park, Sea Organ at Zadar, Split, Dubrovnic, Bosnia. Mostar. If you get as far as Montenegro, Kotor is good but gets to busy with people of Bloody Cruise ships. Durmitor National Park and the Serpentine Pass down into Kotor is a must.
Saw more Police from Austria down than any of Europe.
Me and the other half had such a good time down there that we will hopefully be back down there next May /June time to have a better look around.

A month I don't have as other trips to do.
I guess a large part of the plan is to remember that the key purpose of the jaunt is to ‘Do Croatia’ and not get overly distracted by (well intentioned) ‘Must does…’ en-route.
It’s 1,000 miles one way and another thousand back, just about any which way you chop it.
You get up early (unlike many). 200 miles a day, on either motorways or half decent national roads should be possible, split 100 in the morning, 100 in the afternoon. That’s five days.
Ten days in Croatia (or spare days to use elsewhere) is 15 days.
Five days back. 20 days all in, plus the two overnight crossings from / to the UK.
It’s all doable, but not if you’ve pencilled in a week…. Or you’ll need get up even earlier!

.My thinking was that, if Chris wants to go to Croatia, then make that the goal..forget about all else in-between, that can be another trip
