Day jaunt to France

REMEMBER ALL FULL TANKS AND READY TO GO AT THE TRAIN :rob

No petrol stops in France :nono

:D

I will be setting off 5am from Slough on the M25, M20. Will try to remember to stop at the petrol stop one junction before the tunnel.

If I overtake you then you are really slow :D

No white jacket due to unpredictable weather but will have Hi Viz vest on with company name on the back.

However, we do recognise that it is not always possible to plan your arrival time at Check-In accurately. So, if you arrive at Check-In within 2 hours of your booked departure time, we will, at no extra charge, transfer you to a space on the next available shuttle.
However, please note that this could be quite a long wait if we are very busy.

I was thinking of leaving 0530 from Reading:eek: Zumo says 1.50 perhaps 0515 is better.

Quick question having not used the tunnel for a m/b is it normal form to filter to the front of the check-in if busy with cars? wouldn't want to upset the 4-wheeled kind:augie

there's a lane for bikes normally.most of the time i have gone bikes go on last but when i last came back we went on first.

For the last two weeks there has been zero queue.....

going in daylight coming back in day light.so probably not.i know most of us ride with lights on in day time.so real answer is i dont really know in the eyes of the law:confused:

Mel,
I have a Quest which is rubbish...looking for a 550 at the mo...
Btw, is it OK to pump petrol whilst having a smoke in France!! :)

No need to filter at the UK tunnel entrance because of the way it is set up here.... When you get through the ticket gate, you either go to the 'waiting area' if you are early..or go straight to the 'boarding area'...there is a lane for the bikes...

Re headlight use....I have never bothered, day or night I haven't had a prob...same as i haven't bothered wearing a yellow jacket...which some say is the law!!!!

It's alright, will see you at the tunnel :thumb2

Thanks. My last "nervous rider first-time-rider in Europe" question do I need to adjust the headlights or buy a sticker or does it not matter?

Hi John,

No worries at all.

The headlight will be fine as it is.

Great that you can join us.

I am aware you are a 'first time over the water' candidate. It was something I had in mind when I mapped the route out. I ran a similar jaunt last year and the year before (for exactly the same purpose) and it worked out fine. One of last year's punters was in just the same position as you and he is now hooning around the Continent.

It won't be a race, I promise, as it's not the purpose of the day out. I won't do much over sixty at the front. Why? With a large group speed increases as the bikes spread out. Sixty at the front will often translate to over well over 80 at the back of the snake as they are always playing catch up.

By the end of the day you will have seen many of the road types in France and a reasonable chunk of the north east coast countryside. Certainly, I hope, enough to give you a good feel for riding a bike over there. Once you have got that..... well, get a map and get planning :thumb2

Any problems, concerns, questions on the day, sing out, please. Nobody will mind, least of all me. :thumb2

Cheers,

Richard

Damn

Have fun tomorrow everyone, due to family commitments i wont be coming tomorrow :augie
