Dead Bike

Used the 1200 today after a couple of days off, and it misfired once this morning. Put it down to me not holding the starter long enough.

Just been to use it to nip out to Hein Gerricke and it won't start.

It has been left longer than 2 days in the past so it isn't that (I don't think).So am now wondering if the charging circuit is duff, and i have been running off the battery for the last x number of days/journeys.

I hope that for some reason it is just the battery which has died as I have Monday and Tuesday off and had intended a long weekend out on it. Keep everything crossed

In what way does it not start?

Does it crank but not fire? Does it not crank at all? Does anything light up on the RID?

Do you have an alarm fitted?

If the RID activates but it doesnt crank, but try switching the ignition on, pulling the clutch in & out a few times, then hold the clutch in and press the starter button. Sounds a bit wierd I know.

I've currently got a broken gear indicator switch so the bike doesn't know its in neutral. To start it, I pull the clutch in, but sometimes have to do it a couple of times to get it to crank.

Tobers: Cranks but does not fire, seems to me that there is "umph" there but it isn't catching. Tried pulling the clutch at the time, nay good. No warning lights etc coming up.

Just been told 17:30 before anyone get here, but I am in darkest Birmingham City Centre!!!

Problem is this means that Clark's will be closed if the techy can't get it sorted. But at this hour I am stuck, if I now insist on a recovery (and i didn't realise until I chased up where were BM, that they were dispatching a techy not a recovery truck) that won't be here until 16:30 - 17:00. By the time we get out to Clark's it'll be 17:30 the workshop will be closed.

So I have to pin my hopes on the techy or no weekend away for me. Insert appropriate swear words here **********

First lesson learnt: Always be explicit with the emergency desk about what they are poposing to do to remedy the situation. Don't assume recovery to the nearest dealer.

But 4 1/2 hours is a bit of a long time to have to wait, for the tech. BM Should have called recovery once they knew this.

Yes, but have left the bike for a week before now with no problems. Of course that doesn't mean the alrm hasn't now developed a short!!!!

Cranks but does not fire. fuel pump ?
Open the filer cap & listen whist turning the key on. you should hear the pump.

Dead 1200

If it turns over OK but does not fire I bet it is the high pressure fuel pump,
there have been several 1200 I know of with fuel pumb problems.

Chap from BMW service was pretty good though, but nowt he can do.

Now let me see what are the chances of getting a new fuel pump fitted tomorrow so i can catch up with the other on the weekend away.......Bob and no Hope I guess.

Still could go on the Gilera 180....no p'raps not.

Oh and Goyl sorry don't get the Paul reference????

They should give you a loaner bike straight away so you can carry on with your trip.

BMW Assistance

Offered a car but not really much point going on a biking weekend in a car. Just Sod's law.

Still hopefully will have the bike back Tuesday and just found out the wife is out most of next weekend at horsey shows. So i'll go for a long long blat to get over the trauma of this weekend!!!

I suppose if I have one concern it is this:

If there have been a number of fuel pump failures, what have BM done about the replacement part, because if it the same as the one just failed what is to stop the replacement failing!!??

I have had bikes in the past which have had recalls, so I am not trying to get all high and mighty, but if there is a problem I would like to think that even if the pump s replaced this time it will be replaced again in future should a recall happen.

Still it is alovely day in the Midlands so hope y'all out there filling Mr Brown's tax coffers.

Back in the land of the living

Spoke with Clark's Saturday morning and they were about to check the bike out.

Call Monday Morning to say a new fuel pump had arrived and was being fitted.
Call Monday afternoon it WASN'T the pump!! It was actually the little module that tells the pump tp pump (small silver item on top of the pump...almost lookslike a power transistor but aint). Anyway one was requested and dispatched and I got the bike back this morning.

Ok was a bummer the pump/pump controller failed but overall happy with the service from Clark's.

BMW assistance though, if they are going to send a techy out then at least send one who stands a chance of fixing the fault. If they don't have the kit don't waste their time and the customers, just call a recovery vehicle from the off.

Paranoia

Ok commuted on it this morning and now I am not sure whether I have that post "incident" paranoia where you think you "feel" somthing or whether my throttle control has gone to pot.

Felt like the surging had somewhat returned, but filtering through Birmingham's traffic it could just be that I was not on top form this a.m. and as such was making a bit of a pigs ear of it.

I know the bike is fine on the open roads (well the Uk equivalent of an open road anyway!!).

Right got to get on with some serious planning about whee to go this weekend now.
