Does anybody know how deep the oil seal behind the clutch slave cylinder should sit.

I prised it out but forget to measure it :blast

Could use the old plumbers eye I supose.

Seal should be flush with casing.
Brian.

It's not flush, it's inside the tunnel, Approx couple of inches.

I do have an 1150 box, but not here in front of me, i can look tomorrow and measure the depth for you.

They're both right... It sits flush with the point where the tunnel narrows to the width of the OD of the seal & this is about 2 inches down the tunnel.

Photo's for clarity:

Cheers for the info and pictures chaps.

I got a seal from a local engineering supply at the princely cost of £1.80 instead of £8.00 as per Motorworks.

I will install the seal just past the inner lip and see what happens.

Again many thanks.

Sorry folks,
dislexia took over, for some reason I read 1200 instead of 1150.
Sorry for confusion.
Brian.

Depth measurement

I've recently replaced this seal myself. I measured 38.8mm from the oil seal to the gasket face. I've pressed the new seal 2mm further in than the old one was, in case the old seal has worn a groove in the shaft. This still leaves a gap between the seal and the bearing behind it - it's not bottomed out.

Thanks for that Ian, I have just installed the replacement seal until it is flush with the shoulder. However, it doesn't look as thought the inner sealing edge is far enough in (what would I know :augie)

What di you use to push the seal home?

What do you guys use to push this seal in?

I have used a socket and it's flush with the inner lip. In the photos it looks like another couple of mm past the lip. When I measured it I got 35mm from the gasket face so a couple of mm more I think.

Do you use a socket and extension and then twat it (Gently) with a rubber hammer or should it push in by hand. I don't want to damage hence the questions for a bit of reassurance ;)

Cheers

Yep, that's what I did. Take care that the seal finishes up straight. It's tricky to judge by eye whether it's straight or missaligned, cos you're looking at it end-on.

Happier now :thumb

The seal is now sitting 3.5mm in from the 28mm lip, same measurement all round so will see what happens.

It's amazing what a good twat can do :augie

Come on Motorworks weres my felt and gasket??
