DME Update???

Had my 12000 mile service done at Chester yesterday.
They also did what they called a DME update to the software on the bike. This was apparently done under warranty.
The young lady at service reception was unable to explain what exactly the update was for or why it was done under warranty.
Any ideas ??????

The Digital Motor Electronics (DME) controls the core functions of the engines to ensure optimum dynamic performance, but I have no idea what the update would have done.

Ok! Thanks boys. Just curious as it was done under warranty and i had to sign a form to say that the work had been done, as such.
I was also told that had i not had it done at the time, i would have been contacted to come in for the work to be done, which would suggest it was a recall issue.
I'd certainly be keen to know exactly what it's all about.

Interesting question, I'd like to know the answer to that one.

I had a firmware upgrade recently at my 6,000 mile service - my understanding is that includes a change to how the two clutch switches back off the engine power as one is slowing down and changing gear at low speed, this is to help solve the occasional engine cut out issue that has been reported under these conditions.

Just spoke to Hilltop. This update will NOT affect any Hilltop tuning that has been done in the last two and a half years. Tuning done prior to this time may well be affected.

OK, the update will not affect a Hilltop re-map, BUT does that mean the BMW update is ignored? The OP asked which took precedent. Before anyone rants over nothing it was the OP's question!

OP - which bike? GS or GSA? Which model year? My 6k GSA service is due within the month so it'd be good to know if it's likely to happen.

From when my bike was in , you should be made aware by your dealer to watch out for any glitches in the first week or so after a service ecu update is carried out, they have had a few occasions when the update has not fully loaded and caused abs, esa problems requiring the bike to be returned for remedial work.

On a couple of bikes BMW has had to remotely access the bike to complete the upgrade.

Ah the joys of progress.

As for if the bike has been remapped it would be interesting to know as with cars they can easily be interrogated by a dealer who can detect a remap which has implications for anything still under manufacturers warranty

We are told that some re-mapper's firmware cannot be detected by dealers - this makes sense to me as the dealers will have restricted access and tools, but I find it hard to believe that BMW back at the factory or possible even remotely couldn't tell is changes had been made.

Fully aware of insurance companies having employed experts to interrogate the ecu's of vehicles suspected of being remapped (and not declared) in the event of a claim. Thye can detect the alterations but as yet cannot identify who carried out the work. The brother in laws company has had half a dozen calls in the last 18 months asking if they have carried out work on cars... the insurance company is basically fishing for information .

Also aware of at least 3 vehicles (cars ) that were remapped and went in for normal servicing where it was commented by the dealer that when an ecu service update was carried out it flashed up that the vehicle had been modified

I can't say that I am surprised by any of that - you could never be 100% sure who actually carried out the work unless they deliberately left their signature in the code admitting their identity - however you could deduce whose code it was by comparing it to another bike of the same type that you knew the providence of.

I emailed the service manager at Chester yesterday and asked about the DME update and it's purpose. He replied....
"Hi David. In the event of a gear change that is inadvertently not completed, this software update prevents the transmission from becoming stuck between two gears. This new software version makes gear changes more reliable and smoother. Hope this clears it up for you. Thanks Gary"
