Just to re-cap on the work that's been done on this frame

There's a bit of experimentation and development time here but it's taken about 80 hours to...

Remove lugs for:
Horn
Battery box
Footpegs
Stands
Bodywork

Make and attach brackets for:
Electrics panel
Oil cooler
Fairing
Lugs for rear-sets

Bracing, make and weld in at:
Steering head
Top tube - sub-top tube
Top tube, rear to cradle
Swing-arm pivots
Steering head to s-arm pivot
Rear upper engine/gearbox brace bracket

Engine mount repositioning:
Strip and reposition
Make new rear engine mounts

Detachable frame rails:
Cut frame tubes and shorten
Make scarf joints, 4 pairs
Fit and weld in scarf joints.

Engine / gearbox upper mount:
Make aluminium plate.

Electrics panel:
Make aluminium plate.

Hammerite

Just as an aside - Hammerite Smooth is as bad as everyone said it was!

I used a large can of satin black on the frame and, as it's gone off over the past week, it's got thinner and thinner until it's mostly transparent.

On the flip side, I have found someone local who will prep and powder coat it for £70+VAT

Does that include zinc primer over the blasted steel, John? I found a number of local firms who'd powdercoat the frame for that price but without the zinc which I believe is important.

yeah - a point that I missed. My frame wasn't zinc primered and now I have rust in the crevasses on my bike which has only done 500miles!

Pete

A friend has had a number of parts powdercoated by a local firm and no zinc primer was used. I went to them and asked why and was told it wasn't necessary. My friend's has had no problems so far but these parts were only done nine months ago.

I prefer the piece of mind of zinc primer.

and he probably doesn't commute over the winter on salty roads!!

Wish I'd known about the zinc primer. I was also told that the powder coat is so hard that it can't be blasted off and needs to be acid stripped.. so will be a much more expensive job next time around :-(

My frame was powdercoated WO zinc primer about 10 years ago and still looks like new. I did use a wax spray to fill in all the Crevises and joints.

I can see this turning into one of those acid etch / no acid etch discussions!:)

My K1200 S lives outside and commutes on salty roads and only has four rusty bolt heads. Why those four and no others? Who knows but having counted the rusty bolts and found only four, I will now count my blessings.

Obviously on this project there will be no rust. That's because the chances of it making it outside (ever) seem pretty slim at the moment!

I picked up my frame and bits & bobs from the powdercoaters today, and I have to say they've done a cracking job. Zinc primered like I asked for, two weeks to do as they promised and for a really good price. Like a fool I forgot to take the battery tray which I found needs a small repair but they said bring it along and they'll do it for nowt. Excellent people to deal with so -

What colour did you get it done? Pics?

The parts are still in bubble wrap so I'll have a proper look and take pics tomorrow. The official name for the light silver is the powder manufacturer's name of OMEGA SILVER 22.
