Cmon Minkyhead dont be a drip, if you dont like certain comments then why write on the world wide web your bound to get comments that you dont like-like mine!! :D

I sympathise that you have had duff BM bikes, however the rest of us reading who have had nee trouble-well not much, are for the time being brand loyal, and getting a write up on how shite BM is when Varedaro is the dogs bollocks on this forum shouts for a little bit of fun time abuse, Dont you think? :dance

i'm sure it's a very nice bike, does everything brilliantly, but as others have mentioned,

IT'S FECKING HIDEOUS!

ugly enough to make a horse sick.

new one looks nice though :)

Got to agree with that, a fruit that has fallen straight from the ugly tree and it hit a few branches on the way down.

fair comment ..you do expect to get replies you dont like
not even directed at me directly doesnt mean to say you have to like them
but then again if you spoke like that to people face to face in the pub ..you aint goin to get bought a pint are you ?? may even go over your head if you did

not shouting that the varadero is the dogs at all ...just sucking it to see
its a project .. may stick with it a while .. may move on time will tell ..
it gives me space to think ...solves a immediate proplem
it will be a while before i that sort of money to a bike again whatever the brand ... if ever

gs monkey recently went to a gxr 1000 which is about as far away fron the gs you can get short of valantos yam ...he wanted more power and posted his first impressions i enjoyed what he had to say ..people are inrested in what others do ....buy and try why not ... if you dont like the postings like the telly turn over it aint doin anyone any harm
if every time somone posts somthing you dont like you tell them to f **off
and they post back telling you to f** off ...things would be very boring very quickly
if all the lads are in the pub discussing bikes we just have a bit fun talk shite swop opinions on this that and the other ..when i go next week there will be all sorts of leg pulling and banter
one lad recently went fron a ktm adv to a honda valkyrie were we intrested well yes very much so .. bikes are there to be discussed
but i dont expect to
excomuncated cos i got rid of me beamer

brand snobery sucks ....different folks different strokes

Thats all this is=having a bit of daft banter-its never personal.

The forums give you the chance to speak honestly or dishonestly and also very silly at times. Some people will be super sensible (fine) and others will be right knobs (me at times!!!) with replys but I dont think there is ever anything genuinely malicious in whats written.

Sometimes the words in your head dont translate well to the computer and may not always reflect the humour behind the meaning as in my responses to your thread ripping your new found idaho- the viradaro to bits :beerjug:

Three grand is a very good price for a secondhand Varadero and I would say it makes a excellent buy. But it highlights why I have gone for the BMW. For sure it looks good, but for me its also a good investment. Depreciation on a new Varadero is horrific. Would I swap for a shaft driven Honda big trailie if they update the Varadero...don't know...Will wait till the GS is run in...and I can finally open that engine up...only 460 miles to go. Open that V twin up out of a corner and see what a peach it is.

Interesting comment. But buying a second hand 3000 mile Varadero for 8k less than a new BMW has to make financial sense, if indeed sense is important to you when you think about bikes. Buying a new Varadero is obviously a different issue altogether - my 12GS depreciated less than 2k in 2 years and has to be way cheaper than any Jap bike.

What is the Varadero like to ride? All my previous Hondas have been refined to the point of blandness. They never brought a smile to my face when I looked at them unlike the BM. Is the Varadero different because I'd rather pay a bit more for a bike I really enjoyed than save money on one that bored me.

Indeed - and I'm still loving it up. Gixxer thou torque is something to behold. Done a couple of tours on it now and it really is fun.

Might be looking at a Varadero (07+ model) when I come to change next. I think you've got to change your style / brand / model of bike every time. Life too short not to chop and change your bike.

Enjoy the bike mate and keep posting. I keep posting to this forum despite being sans GS for a few months. I also post to the CBR forum, despite not having a Honda for years. The GS forum has good banter with a mixture of homophobic, xenophobic pipe smoking, slipper wearing, bearded fat old gits which make it all the more amusing :rob :thumb (I think I've just described myself ;) )

[still want an 1100GS for my garage :D ]

sorry
your missing the point here ...im not selling it cos of the money although not being a millionaire its a nice side product ..the unreliability was driving me nuts thats the only thing i can fault it for i really did love the stupid thing
but it didnt love me back
i cant tell you properly what i think of the vevaladeerro cos its not fettled yet
its in astate of undress getting lubed and loved waiting for the tyres to go on about another week or ten days [spare time] should do the trick
im not expecting gs standards of handling ..85% would be nice but i can tell you it is bloody fast ...from 80 on wards topin gear its bye bye fast
just trying to imagine waht another 15/20bhp and a 40kg diet may do for it
if it does what i hope it does then ill probebly wait and check out the new tiger and honda when they come out
its a project its two wheeled transport with a means to an end
its a project that may or not work out but ill survive with it for six or twelve months
i aint bored at the moment cos i can take the thing to peices its got carbs and wires and cables attached to throttles ...weird !!that may well change when i start to ride properly ..hey if i trip land on my face ill post and tell you
honda bland mmm not sure about that had a blade and a blackbird in the past dont rember any blandness just eyes as wiide as saucers m,ost of the time .....
i got 8900 fot it fully kitted abs ect cant expect much more if you scour the mcn website
if you approach a dealer have a sense of humour ready to hand

fair enough mate recieved and misunderstood whats wrong with a viagradaro anyway :D

After having a 1150 Gs, I was looking at the same again, but felt the same as you minkyhead, I couldn't justify the 6 - 7000k to get back on the road, to cut a long story short, just bought an 05 plate Varadero ex demo bike and done just over 200 miles, first impressions are more comfy than the GS was, better wind protection (no buffeting) in fact for straight out of the box useability it is spot on and my first impressions are that I prefer it to the Gs, I feel as though I have bonded with the bike straight away, as I find myself smiling at it just when I look at it, the missus likes it too, looking forward to many miles two up

just got to sort some luggage out now!

I intend to keep visiting this site as I think the Varadero forum just doesn't do it for me

Enjoy your varadero minkyhead, you get a lot of bike for you money IMHO

Just my two pennorth

:thumb :beerjug: :D

That many failures I'd have been out too. If Honda offered the Varedero over here I probably wouldn't have had a GS in the first place.

cant say i think it is the best looking thing ive ever owned i just dont care ..the gs is well a t best contiversial in that department if it was image i was after i wouldnt have bought either
just under 4 thosand mile up now all is well [ a bit of record in recent years ]not even adjusted the chain( scottoiler } alredy fitted :thumb
exept ,........
err indorrs doesnt like the pillion seat its to low all she can see is the back of my intresting head amazingly she says there is too much legroom the pegs are to low easy cure i know cant win can you :o

i really like it so im keeping it for work and solo rides i also think running it alongside my next bike will balance out the overall milage on both and help the resale value by a wantable margin especially on the newer one :bounce1

we went the nec and she is well pleased with the 2nd most ugly bike on the planet so im negotiating now for a 06 ...v strom to run alongside 900mile handles really well very very quick in terms of big trailies anyway way more power than the gs and vara ...............i was well impressed a competent motorcycle ...crap screen ..nothing new there then :(
4700 quid ..hope hes not reading this .signed ..mr smith ???
ill post on the strom in the other bikes bit when i get it and get it on the road
buy one get one free ????? :clap

still miss the beemer i really did like it ...there it is ... but the value for money out there is making me rethink things long term for 7700 quid i ve got two bikes with a combined milage of 2300 miles
a extra 40 quid ins extra 40 odd quid tax bobs yer auntie

enjoying things not missing the service costs much either :D :beerjug:

listen how anybody with a GS can accuse another bike of being ugly is beyond me........

but certainly with the Varadildo its like dogs and their owners, clearly
:nenau :nenau :nenau

You're not comparing like with like. If you were comparing a new varadero with a new GS then you may have something interesting to contribute, however it is patently f#*cking obvious that a 4 year old 1300 mile example of anything makes more financial sense than ANY new bike.

So you were unhappy with the BMW, fair enough, but don't try to kid us that the Varadero is as good as a GS. we've made up our collective minds now don't confuse us with facts.

we ??? our ?? collective ... not intresting ...mmm i take it your speaking for everyone then
im not kidding anyone .
.just said what happened not my fault you dont like it
someone dug the post up i replied ...........
let me know if you decide its not my opinion ..
untill then .. youll just have to live with it
thres no point in any one else saying anything because you have already spoken for them ... im sure some will be very greatfull
saves having to speak and think for themselves
its only a guy talking about other motorbikes dont take things so much to heart
calm down .......
chill

Sorry Minky, my sarcasm emoticon was missing presumed fed.

In my obtuse and sarcastic was I was being supportive (really? Really, really). The serious facts are that you'd be hard pushed to find a bad bike and one with seriously low mileage for a fraction of the price of your Beemer is the absolute best option. It has Honda reliability (usually fantastic - as is my experience of BMW) good comfort and weather protection etc etc. I looked at them before plumping for the GS. The depreciation is the biggest cost in any vehicle purchase adn you've nicely sidestepped that one.

The crack about "we've made up our mind, now don't confuse us with the facts" was a dig at the rest of us Tossers who buy overpriced excellence because it has 'character'. Mind you I reckon it also has looks and handling which the Varadero doesn't.

To paraphrase Zaphod Beeblebrox "10/10 for good thinking, minus several million for style"

Madam Guizot

One point that seems to have been missed is that at least you can ride at night now. Varaderos have some of the best headlights fitted to a bike, GS's don't.
My Dad has had a 1999 Varedero and Pan European from new, the Vera has done 30k and the Pan over 60k.
He had to replace the Vera's regulator/rectifyer, but replaced it with a pattern part. Chain and sprockets have been replaced once, but no Scottoiler is fitted. He gets 200+ miles per 26 litre tank when ridden moderately hard, which equates to 40+ to the gallon.

It handles well enough so that I got the pegs down the first time I rode it, but I prefer the handling of the 1150 GS that I own. Engine wise the GS stomps from lower in the rev range whereas the Vera needs a bit more revving. I also find the GS a more comfortable sitting position as the Vera gives me lower back pain. This is a very subjective matter and has more to do with me. The Vera has more leg room.

The finish on the Vera isn't as good as my VFR was, but then Dad only cleans his bikes every other year (whether they need it or not), and I'm unimpressed with BMW's finish.

I'm sure you'll know a lot more about poor finish now you own a Suzuki:blast
I bought my Y2K 1150GS with full HB luggage and bars fitted, 20k miles for £4500 a couple of months back, so I'm confident about not losing too much money on it. I'd do what you did every time, and buy a used but loved bike.
