Kind of done by many now but I had a loan LC from the nice people at Bahnstormers yesterday whilst my GSA was being serviced and for what it is worth thought I would share my initial thoughts.

The good

Road holding/ handling - Awesome, incredibly forgiving, very predictable and after the GSA seems like a chuckable light weight.

Stability - even more awesome. After 32 years of riding the best bike I have ridden is the GSA....the LC beets it. It feels like it is attached to the road by some sort of magic force. There is a fast sweeper on the A31 that has a washboard surface. On the GSA at speed this causes some movement around the road as the front suspension tries to keep the front tyre on the road. No such experience with the LC....remarkable.

Screen - effective on the motorway behind traffic.....you get air flow but no buffeting. Not as effective as the GSA screen for protection but sooooo much better than the oil head.

Build quality - initial impression looks to be much better....better fixings and overall finish but I guess time will tell.

Gear box - as previously reported quite a clunk into first....more so than the GSA but then the LC had not done 2000 miles. Otherwise much faster and smoother on the move and no problem finding neutral like others have had.

Comfort - seat and riding position immediately feel good and 2 hours in the sadle with no complaints.....so for me a definate improvement over the previous model.

Motor - like wow....turbine like....just plus and pulls....sooooo much fun. When the new RT comes (i have an oil head as well) out it will be a world beater and probably makes the k1600 obsolete IMO.

Negatves for me.

- Instuemnts - too much info and too confusing...I am not sure if this changes as you get used to it or configure the screen but there is just too much info with key stuff being too small.

- Gear ratios - as previously reported they are just too close with 5 & 6 gearing being too high. I found myself in 6th far more often than the GSA which I only really use for high speed motorway work. This is a deal breaker for me as I find the GSA so much more relaxing high speed cruising....feels just to frantic on the LC.....also there was a vibration through the seat at about 80 that I would find wearing after a while. For a touring bike I think BMW have missed a trick with the ratios.

Throttle - this may be something that you just get used to over time but I find all the ride by wire bikes I have ridden very difficult to ride smoothly at slow speed in traffic. The LC was no exception.....holding a constant 30 smoothly was tricky. The commute into London would not be pleasant!

Overall, an awesome bit of kit but for me with the type of riding I do commuting down the motorway into London...I will be sticking with the GSA.

I hope the new GSA has a wider spaced gearbox with a higher 6th....if not then I think this is a real mistake for what is largely a touring bike. If it does then the negs above will be massively outweighed by the positives and will make the GSA an unbelievable machine....and I will be first in the que for a new one.

Cheers

Great report, well balanced.

The reasons you give for possibly not buying one are similar to the reasons why I did buy one!

I can see that....great fun to ride.....loved it....probably need a longer ride on it to get over the "not what I am used to factor". Still can't get over the stuck to the road bit and the instant go of the motor....truly moves the game forward.

Good overall report

....however, the only negative I can identify with is the instrument panel - the analogue is too small and I only use the digital speedo...and there is way too much pointless info that can be displayed.

Gears - not sure I get the issue :nenau
I tend to hold onto gears into quite high up the rev range if I am riding enthusiastically. If I am going to be cruising on a motorway, I kick up into 6th and leave it there - no problems.
Can't say I've noticed any vibrations at 80mph...will have to look out for that.

Throttle - you get used to the sensitivity and adapt to it.
I've never had any issues maintaining a steady 30mph - although there is some hunting that seems to appear around 3,250 rpm....maybe if it occurs at at 30mph in 2nd, I subconsciously kick up into 3rd?

They all seem to like your report, ? wonder if that's because it contains only what they want to hear ? :blast

Pretty much what I would have said - you get used to light throttle and on my standard (no modes) bike riding an constant 30 is easy. A few people have mentioned vibration through the seat but can't say I have noticed anything - will concentrate harder on the French Motorways next week :D

I'm not sure that I get that, at least the numbers etc are big enough for my old eyes to read! I couldn't read the digi-clock on my previous Explorer. Suggest don't scroll thro it, then you won't have to read all of the stuff

Actually there is a vibe on mine but only when riding quick and using a lot of engine braking from high revs, in fact it caused the top to unscrew from my nixwax visor clean which was under my seat, yep the stuff all ran out, no worries tho, it cleaned off, do the top up extra tight on my new bottle
. I never get the vibe out touring with missus on the back ('cos I ride slower).

If you think the GS throttle is sensitive try the Triumph Explorer, or go on their forum and search throttle. I still have half a tube of the special 744 viscous damping grease that many of us were applying to smooth it out. I think that the GS -LC is absolutely fine as it is for a FBW!

Enjoyed that.

Hi oldnfat. Enjoyed that. A fair write up. Nice one. Lets hope the right people read it. Looking forward to a test ride soon myself, so lets see how it delivers.

Exactly:thumb

"balance" in a report is if no importance....... "accuracy" is better.

And what is it with all these people doing test reports? It's like they want to be involved in some sort of "pageant"

Al:rolleyes:

Damm it! Found me out....it is all about ME really.

On the initial test ride I had the same thoughts (by which I am assuming you mean that the new bike's gearing is too Low) so I called into a friend who has a 2009 model and we went for a quick spin to compare directly. What we found surprised me insofar as the new bike was travelling slightly faster in 6th compared to the 2009 model at the same rev's which would suggest that the new bike is, if anything, slightly higher geared than the old one. I'm assuming it's the increased power and torque that makes it feel livlier and therefore lower geared.

Yes, I did a similar test taking one bike out after another. The WC appears to rev slower at the same speed (lower gearing) but it seems to feel more urgent and willing to pile on more revs.

It's not an extreme difference but it does seem to encourage bad behaviour.
