Went out on my 1200gs 2004 today to do a few errands ........

everything going fine until I approached a set of traffic lights and so I started to down shift.........

down into 5th........ then tried to down shift to 4th......but nothing, the bike stuck in 5th

it would shift back up to 6th but would only shift back down to 5th and go no further.

Pulled over and stopped........... tried downshifting while stationery....still nothing........

switched ignition off and low and behold the bike clicked down through the gears.

So off again I went, but the problem was still there........ it didn't happen all the time I would have to kick the gear shift down to achieve a lower gear and this didn't always work.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Graham......................

you could be right I was hammering it a little.... but even at rush hour traffic it was the same....... might try changing the gear box oil.........

Down shifting

Raven, had a similar problem recently after only recently having my gs serviced. Would only happen after about an hour so assumed it was to do with the gearbox heating up or hot oil??:( Had visions of new gearbox:eek:

Only occurred when downshifting.

Phoned the dealers as was advised to lubricate the linkages behind the lever to the gearbox..............it worked!!!

It appears that the return spring just struggles if the linkage gets stiff and so won't allow the lever to reset.

Spray it with wd40 on a regular basis now.:thumb Haven't had it occur since:beerjug:

Thanks for that..........

I will try that when it stops raining............ and that could be quite a while:thumb2

Some folks have tried WD on the linkage and had no joy, some including myself have been lucky with the aerosol solution. Its a build up of fine dirt particles within the linkage shaft bushings that cause the binding and shift problems.

The best solution is to remove, strip and clean the linkage shaft and also clean and lubricate the bushing prior to reassembly.

Bumped into a guy the other day who couldn't downshift, and it turned out that a pebble had become lodged in the linkages...removed the pebble and voila, worked fine.

ok........ so I changed the gear-box oil and sprayed wd40 on the gear shift moving parts..........

went out for a blast today and all is perfect....... oh there was only about .4 of a litre in the gear-box when I drained it and it takes .8 to.9..........anyway thanks for all the advice

If I were you I would look for a black stain at the joint between the engine and gearbox casings. If you have one, theres a very good chance that the missing oil is getting past the gearbox input shaft seals and into the clutch housing, which could explain the low gearbox oil level.

Even with the correct amount of old gearbox oil, mine changed gear much better with fresh oil in the box. You might think about doing the FD oil as well on an 04 bike if it hasn't been done before, it should be nice and black by now.
