Drive Spline greasing

Just put my November 2018 1200GSA Rallye in for a service prior to the warranty ending. It has 7500 miles on the clock. A small hole was found in the rear drive boot, to replace it the drive needs to be split. The thing is stuck solid…..I’m thinking a bit of lube in there every now and again would be a good thing.

For £40 its nothing for total piece of mind. If you are going to Marshalls I have total faith in Paul. He's recently replaced my engine casings under warranty due to corrosion. I was somewhat apprehensive about a factory built engine being rebuilt by hand but I have total confidence in him. Everything is as it should be.

I had exactly the same issue on my 2017 GS Rallye at 11,000 miles and just after the extended warranty ran out. A small hole appeared in the 'folds' of the rear gaiter. Again my shaft was rusted solid on to the final drive. My dealer tried to charge me to repair it. I told them to fix it FOC as I had dropped the bike in for a final check over a month earlier before the warranty expired and they gave the bike a clean bill of health. The rust had clearly been there longer than a month hence my complaint. They then told me it would not be covered under warranty as the rubber gaiter had a hole in it and they were not covered under the warranty (showing me the clause). I advised Them that the water had got in before the hole as the hole was new, the rust was not. I also suspect the hole was made as a result of it being 'pinched' from the inside due to slight movement from the now seized shaft. I ended up reading the general manager his future if he did not sort it and advised him to request a good will gesture from BMW to sort it. This was eventually done and all parts replaced at no cost to me.

I now have a 2021 GSA and will get the drive dropped and lubbed at its 6,000 service next March.

I have the 21 GSA 1250. Has BMW done anything to the new bikes to stop them rusting up, or do they perhaps add a bit more grease at assembly. Maybe they coated the splines ?

To the collective!

I have my 1250 going in for its 2 year old (8500miles) service on Monday, I’ve asked about having the rear driveshaft splines greased up at the same time.
The extra charge for the grease-up is £40.00

So service is £160 + optional driveshaft spline grease up at £40 total £200.

What do you think guys?

If you’re concerned enough to consider having grease on the splines, then definitely do it yourself. £40 is cheap, however having done it, I’d rather do it myself every time as I will know the whole procedure was done perfectly.

i bought my r1250gs brand new seven months ago,the splines were bone dry.obviously i greased them with optimol
but we all know that they come dry
thats why i did it

Apparently Staburags for the boot and Castrol Moly for the splines. I used an extreme pressure moly grease which also has good anti corrosion properties and I also purchased some Molybdenum Disulphide powder to work into the grease before applying. In doing I’ve raised the Moly content of the grease quite considerably. I used clear silicone grease on the boot.

Hi Fullchat, I agree Paul is top mechanic and a nice lad to boot.

I’m hoping he can do something to reduce the notchyness of my into 3rd gear change, it was silky smooth for the first 6000 miles but now it’s become quite notchy getting into 3rd from either direction up or down, it’s fine using quick shift only does it on a clutch changes. Hoping the fresh oil will improve things.
Anyone else had this?

Which grease do you use on which component?

I basically told him how much of a thorn in his side I was going to be and how I would be referring this to the fatherland and telling them how crap their dealership was if I was left with no other choice. I knew I was in the right which is why I took this course of action. I'm not usually a moaning git but sometimes you have to fight for what is right. My long winded email to them was polite and professional but succinct and to the point.

They gave up the dealership about a year later. We now have a much better BMW dealer in the island who are great and which is why I bought another one.
