Drive Spline greasing

To the collective……..feed back!

Well I took my 1250 in for its two year service this morning, as previously mentioned when I booked it in I’d queried about having the splines greased and the suggested additional £40 was already added to my service sheet, however the technician came out to meet me and invited me back to the workshop, he mentioned the splines greasing query that was added to my work sheet which we discussed and to cut a long story short he suggested that I leave the splines until my 12,000 mile service as by far the majority of the bikes that he has had apart were quite well greased up from the factory.

He’s a very good technician and a guy I trust so I took his advice and kept the extra £40 in my pocket:thumb

He also produced a detailed video of the service inspection which arrived on my phone while I was sat drinking complimentary coffee in Marshall’s showroom, I’d be happy to post it on here if anyone is interested.

I came away very satisfied and the total cost of service was £160.00. My bike is 2 years old 9,000 miles on the clock.(1250 Rallye)

They know !

So BMW have been putting more grease on the later 1250s?

So they need greasing:D
People with 1200gs keep on lubing:D

40 pound uk if you do it one time very well worth price and time, but if you worry much and do every year cheap to buy lube and not cost your time in garage. :beerjug:

AS SAID,MY BIKE IS BRAND NEW R1250GS,,SPLINES WERE BONE DRY .
i greased them with optimol myself .
so dont be thinking its already done in berlin.

Is it possible, without dissmantling, to pull the rubber boot back and look in to see if it is dry ?

The short answer is not really. The gaiter is quite tough/stiff and pulling it out the way enough to see inside is likely to cause damage to it.

As I said earlier here, my 2021 was almost dry on splines and bone dry on gaiters. I'm glad I've done the grease job.

Yes, an expensive combination.

Have been looking to buy some of the Kluber Staburags NBU 30, its very expensive stuff and difficult to source.

Anyone interested in buying 50g for about £10, plus post, was looking at buying a 1.2 kilo tin at around the £200 mark and splitting it?

Any decent Moly grease for the splines. Any decent white marine grease for the gaiter.
£200/kilo.....madness.

If you mean the splines… then no, you need to remove the paralever bolt and drop down the drive to properly see.

It’s my thought that if the boot has been properly seated/positioned and sealed with the white stuff, in the main water ingress shouldn’t happen with normal riding. Condensation over the winter months is perhaps as an important consideration as water ingress for keeping the splines well lubed with very viscous grease.

If as has been suggested the splines don’t actually slide in and out, you are only applying grease as a rust repellent and not as a lubricant so any sticky grease should do?

It’s logical to think they might slide seeing as BMW supposedly want a high moly content paste/grease. I don’t know where this is stipulated though.

The technician who I discussed this with said that it was the general consensus that the rusting was caused by condensation as it could be found on bikes with no obvious signs of water ingress or damage to the rubber seals, this would make sense and it would be interesting to know if the problem was more common with bikes that are stored in less than perfectly dry garages etc.
