Enduro

It would be a good idea to try an off road school before you spend a lot of money; green laning might not be your idea of fun and this would be a cheaper way of finding out.

I wouldn't get too hung up on getting a bigger engined bike. A 250 would be a good starting point and it will manage the road sections just as well as a bigger engined bike. Most of the road work between lanes is done at 50-60mph.

My tuppence worth....

My first bike was a DRZ400S. Bought it with the intention of green-laning with a chum. I'm 15 stone and it was more than able to pull my sorry, unskilled arse through all kind of situations. I only sold it as I wanted a more road-biased bike. I found it horrible to ride on the road.... but then I didn't really play around with any of the settings to make it more road-friendly.

A few bikes later and I bought a KTM 520 EXC. Great fun, but just too powerful for my lack of off-road skills.

If I was doing it again, I'd go for a 250. Something nice and light for when you spend 60% of the time picking the damn thing up. Plus, as a few people have said, the orange beasts are a bit maintenance-hungry.

That said, my current bike is a 990 Superduke. Different beast altogether. Fantastic fun.

Good luck !

after years of trying the best green lane bikes for me, 4t 250s are the best round here 400+ too much dont need all that power in wales anyway the 250 is more than enough spend £1500 ON A TTR, WR, CRM If you want more after more experience then at least the 250 you have wont have lost anything either!
ps massive difference in lifting a 150kg x challenge out of the bog versus a 110kg 250 just have a look at my posts in the wales trails!!:thumb
