Fired up my R1100GS for first time in weeks and rode off to meet friend.
First thing I noticed is that my Tomtom rider did not come on despite being correctly in cradle.
Further down the road I realised that speedo not working as I approached speed camera.
Then the engine just died as if I had hit the kill switch. Parked at side of road and had to wait in blazing heat for my wife to rescue me with car and trailer.

Any idea what could have caused this? I've had a problem with brake lights not working despite changing bulb light unit and the switch.

Loaded bike on trailer and strapped down quickly as only a mile or so from home. At first roundabout, the straps slipped and the bike moved and then flipped over whilst still attached to trailer. Both bike and trailer damaged. Not my lucky week.

Alternator or Hall sensor ?

Speedo electronic on yours ?

Speedo is cable driven so unrelated to the engine problem .

Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the ignition on ?

Wiring loom has cracked up around headstock area. It seems to be a regular fault with looms strangled by their cable ties and not letting them flex. Good luck Sid

+1 early hexheads are known for this ( still)

Is it a subtle call for come to Sids and fix my bike ;) :beerjug:

if its anything like the hexhead it will under the headstock in the most inaccessible place and the loom tape is wound the wrong way lol

Plus if IIRC Sid has the Touratech 41l tank fitted as well

The bike turns over and fuel pump primes. ..

This. I had the same on my 11RS. New sub loom to the ignition switch is the answer and not too expensive.

Edit- Neil, the problem will only occur intermittently when the bars are turned so the bike will start ok 90% of the time and then fail.

Diagnostic test ...

start up the bike and give the sub loom a shoogle. :D

Crapaud need to say whether the bike started with the pump priming and turning over or not...😉

If the bike turns over it should start… and then cut out when the bars are moved through their arc or the ignition loom pulled around...
Sid’s bike turns over but won’t start ..

I know all about the ignition loom having breakages and being too tightly cabled tied to the headstock - it was me that first posted the warning many many years ago about cutting all the cable ties securing wiring to the head stock allowing the electric cables/wiring to hang loose rather than be flexed continuously on the same point 👍

Turns over and won't start is what my bike did when the HES died. Dry day, working perfectly one minute, no go the next. Wiring had been replaced some time earlier, so it was the actual sensor. I wondered whether it was at the root of my problems when I cooked the engine several times in bad traffic on a previous trip.

Steptoe, do you fancy coming to my party in August?
I could probably find room for you as Star Guest.
As much food and drink as you like, all free.
Seriously it would be great to see you again.
