(c) The oil, of which your bike is probably comfortably full, is probably darkish red in colour. The oil has probably completely filled the sightscreen, rendering it totally dark in appearance.

EEEK! Now I'm really worried, I can't see any Ribena at all, just Fosters, well it looks very amber, are you sure that you are not getting your Ribena mixed up with your Redex, or has somebody peed into my engine while I wasn't looking?

With the bike on its side stand the oil level in the sight glass will drop close to minimum. This should allow you to see the difference and what it will look like when it needs topping up.

Take some duct tape, cut a 2 inch square piece and stick it over the sight glass. Now every 2 weeks peel it off, pop into your BMW dealer and ask them to check it while you have a coffee. Simples.

No, I'm in the garage trying to get some of the air out of my tyres, as per Wappings dilemma.

One bike has the sight glass on the left, and the other on the right, so I've now parked them next to each other, so I can check them at the same time.

Now, I'm assuming your bike is fairly new?
If so the oil is going to be very clean and when stood on the centre stand it could look as if there is no oil within the sight glass because it's still very clear.

if you set your bike on the side stand you should be able to clearly see the oil line and this will give you a clear indication of the colour of your oil and what it looks like even when the sight glass is full.

So once you know the difference just use the manual for the oil checking routine.

Exactly. The running in oil is very clear, and looks like there's nothing in there. I'm assuming that the bike has had the first service as it's a few months old? If that's the case, it should have the regular oil now, which is much darker.
