Whenever I start up Entourage, it sits and thinks for a couple of minutes. I'm thinking this is something to do with the file size, but may be wrong (that would be the case if it were a pst file).

Any mac users know anything about this srt of thing?

Might be worth verifying your database to check it's integrity. Use the Database Utility tool which you should find in Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office.

Bit of a long shot but also worth trying a safe boot, clears lots of caches etc. and can speed things up no end.

(Hold down "S" on boot until the apple appears (startup will take longer than normal), log in and then restart the machine and carry on as normal)

you should be able to compact the database using the same utlility or hold down the option key on start I think to bring up the maintainance options

.pst files of many many mb (2.5 gb in facta) open in a flash using PC XP or Vista....thank Dog or my life would be spent waiting...

If you've got a .pst of 2.5Gb then I'd do something about it pretty soon! They get really unstable when approaching 2Gb and well dodgy over that, Microsoft even do a tool do get them back below 2Gb as Scanpst tool can't cope!

I personally won't let a .pst file get over a gig, just start another one, doesn't matter how many you have!
