ESA default rider weight?

Glad we're no longer shouting :-)
I'll wait and see if BMW respond. Eg with ESA a light rider with only a top box might not need to set ESA for luggage whereas a fat tosser might need luggage settings even with no luggage :-)

Exactly! common sense really, just set it to what feels right, but generally heavier load needs more pre-load to maintain ride height and increased rebound damping to stop that extra weight bouncing up and down for ages after hitting a bump.

I know how preload and rebound damping operate! I'm just trying to work out what BMW use as the base setting ... I'll let you know what they say.

I'm a bit (aherm) over the quoted average weight and I've not had any issues with the ESA ride height or damping when set on 1 rider option.

I've had no issues either. . . It's a super system and nearly every ride I'm on I use 3 of the 5 modes without thinking about it. Love it! Maybe won't be saying that when the shocks are done though!!

"
PAGE 68/69 OF THE MANUAL STATES THAT FULL FUEL LOAD + RIDER = 95kgs.

WIKI SAYS THAT THE DENSITY OF GASOLINE IS 0.71-0.77 kg/l.

TAKING THE MIDDLE VALUE OF 0.74kg/l X 21l = 15.5kg.

THEREFORE RIDER = 95kg - 15.5kg = 79.5kg. 12.5 STONE SEEMS PRETTY AVERAGE TO ME."
79.5 kg minus the ten kg for Helmet and clothing 69.5 KG My Initial response of 70.8 Kg was 1.87 % out. Sorry.

Has anybody else ever rode solo and forgot to change The ESA from pillion mode ie two helmets to solo

If so, how was the ride....a bag of sh*t or ok ?

I did both: riding solo with ESA on two-up mode and with a pillion on solo mode. I will NEVER do that again: horrible noises come from the FD. I got worried it could be damaged. Never more.

Feel it ....... Feeeeeeel it ..... !

Sit on your bike, go for a ride (on a selection of smooth A, bumpy B..), shut your eyes (almost .. not completely or you'll crash ..) and feeeel what the bike is doing underneath you.

Feel the tyre pressures through your pants and your feet, feel the telelever through your hands, feeel the rear tyre in your throttle ....

Do it again on a different setting, slacken off the tyre pressures a tad, put them back up a tad, ride on solo, then solo plus luggage and feel the subtle change in the steering geometry ..

Don't worry about what the flipping page number and paragraph says ...

Tune into it and feeel it ...

(a blind bloke would make an excellent motorcyclist ... :eek :D)

Thanks for that feed back. I'm glad it's not just my bike doing it. Despite setting the preload for pillion when riding solo and vice versa it shouldn't behave like that. Before I realised what was wrong I was getting rid of the bike. The bike was a dog until changed

IF YOU ARE A FAT TOSSER THEN YOU WILL NEED TO INCREASE THE SPRING PRE-LOAD AND INCREASE THE REBOUND DAMPING ACCORDINGLY.

Do you really HAVE to shout? Geez!

I can sort of understand you asking the question, but don't see how the answer will be all that useful. With the older version of ESA you only get three presets, and none are likely to be exactly correct for your situation. For exact auto tuning of preload and associated damping settings you need the latest ESA set to AUTO mode.

Just wondering if BMW had taken into consideration the pie eating tossers weight gains............:D

According to the bods at Revs racing ( pre ESA witchcraft) bikes on a consumer basis were sprung to single rider of 80KG plus riding kit

It is of course the spring that is the effecting part here and pre load not damping and compression per se

Question now is, if I just changed the spring to a heavier spring, lets say 100 kg weight just for safety sake, would the ESA sensors have to be recalibrated by BMW or not...........:nenau:nenau
