FFS just undo the speedo cable at the wheel, tuck it out of the way and see if the noise disappears.

If it still makes the noise it'll be the speedo drive. If all is quiet it's the cable.

Yes but starting your answer with FFS sets the tone,
I wouldn't let anyone start a conversation with me with FFS. so why should i on here. But its easy from the safety of distance;
Its common good manners is it not? it costs nothing to be decent
So,
I have asked for assistance, i got great answers to my question with different results. ( thank you all) As i said i WILL check everything i have been told.
I know that some of these will be not related to the problem, but not knowing all, as you seem to from your wealth of experiance, i will check out anyway.

But to keep a bit of light hearted banter in the forum (see Mandy's thread about craic) I asked all to keep them coming and started to give odds on the solution. Just for a bit of fun. As you will see your solution given by another tosser is favourite at 2:1 so one would assume that i have got the message. But as i said if it annoys, or frustrates you then please ignore. Thank you.

Ron I understand exactly what you are saying, I don't believe Steppers was intentionally being Nasty, it was more of a "try this and you'll know " sort of an exasperated sort of a mini explosion, rant sort of thing!

Neil "Perhap"s the FFS wasn't just the best of ways that you could have started that sentance.
But I think understand your sentiment "Exasperation" because you can feel it in your water but you can't touch it and sort it from way down there. And no one else seems to have a grasp on the handle.

I feel the same way with Mr "I fell off my Boxer on Boxing day" on the BMW club we're both pretty damn sure what it is but we can't just get it across?

Not bothered one way or tuther mate, if anyone is exasperated by my question then i appoligise, but why bother answering it? I read most posts as i'm sure we all do and if it interests me or i can add something to the thread in the way of help or encouragment i will. If not i won't, simple. what i will not do is get nasty, or rude to someone just because he or she dosent know the answer right away. If we all knew as much as some it would be a quite forum now wouldn't it? And we wouldn't need a moderator. As far as im aware this section of the forum is for technical questions and then those in the know can answer IF they wish. All im saying is if its so annoying then don't do it or if you must then why be nasty?

If I can just interrupt the "banter" for a moment, I still fancy the alternator belt as the culprit, if it is the symptoms should become worse with extra electrical load, try testing it with and then without lights/heated grips etc.

Hi falcoron,
In case it is the speedo cable, would it be a good idea spraying WD40 or even oil into the cable? It could just be dry.
The other thing you could check, is to make sure the speed cable goes straight from the speedometer down to the wheel.
I also replaced mine one month ago and paid attention to these details.

Ahhh....but FFS ..... didn't I read that you still had the howling when you pulled up for a moment .....in which case....FFS the speedo cable FFS will have stopped whizzing around.... therefore my diagnosis is you conincidentally have not one problem but two FFS alternator poly V-belt is a good start for the noise and the speedo cable for the speedo with a mind of it's own FFS QED 2 problems concealing each other and confusing the diagnosis..... where do I collect my medal ?

It will be checked and replace as soon as i can get away from work. Its probably worth doing anyway with this milage. Bye the way this is the 7:2 second favorite

Not so FF ( fleetingly fast) Geko me old son, I will need to check both first FFS (fault finding session)
I am going to undo the speedo tonight and i will report tomorrow if its been FFS ( fixed for sure )
So i'm not paying out just yet or giving medals (FFS, false falice symbols)

I think that is the answer, thers two probs alternator belt, fan belts in cars make a hell of a racket. Don't oil the cable as it will work it's way into the the speedo head and all will be fffs. Speedos are not robust and so if it made that noise it would stop at once, of course if you have Manderine coloured gs, the speedo is probably registering correctly as we know these are the fastest gs's around. any other colour and the speedo's knackard.
