EWS! Fault... Anyone?

What got me going again, twice, was taking the keys away from the bike for a few minutes. Whether this actually made any difference is anyones guess.

It seems i now have the Ring Antennae problem, went to start the bike this morning ready for work and nothing happened when i pressed the start button, and with EWS showing on the dash.

Tried turning the ignition off and on and tried starting again, did this about 10 times then eventually it started.

Pain in the arse as i doubt i will get it sorted until the new year, but fingers crossed it will be ok for my shifts over xmas.

Pain in the arse, but hey ho these things happen

Well after the occasional failure to start, went out this morning to do the rounds of family and friends as i worked xmas. Went to head home at 4.30 no start and EWS fault showing. Must have tried over 20 times, did not clear unfortunately.

So finally got home at 21:00 with it booked for collection by SBW at 09:00. Whats the score with loan bikes if it cannot be fixed this week? Need to be able to get to work again by the weekend. Is it BMW assist who should sort this or the dealer?

Bit of a bummer!

It's a pretty simple job to repair.. takes about 40mins then it has to run on the computer for a while (according to my dealer). If you're covered by warranty.. you should get a loaner bike IMO

then it has to run on the computer for a while

only to clear the stored fault code.

you definitely do not need to attach the bike to the dealer GT1 to get it to run. a friend of mine has successfully fitted one in his shed :)

Agree, the reader coil is only that. It's used solely to pick up the signal from the transponder chip in the key, and convey it to the EWS module. The key is coded into the EWS, and the reader is just picking up the signal.:rob There should be no reason to use the GT1 other than to clear any codes left behind.

EWS Poblem

Dear All,
I had this problem about a week after the 800 mile first service on my Sept 07 GSA. When it occured I had stopped the bike then tried to start it again immediately having waited for the normal switch on checks to be completed. The bike was comopletely dead, would not even turn over. I waited for a few minutes and tried again and the bike started normally. I stopped it and tried to start it immediatedly after the switch on checkes had been completed and it was dead again. Waited a few minutes and it stared nornally.
The bike behaved like this for several days before I took it back to the dealer.

So in addition to all the other tips it might be worth waiting for a few minutes and trying again.

The bike was taken away yesterday morning only to find that SBW are not open again until next Wednesday. So BMW Assist have organised a loan car today, to cover until at least next Thursday as i have another run of shifts from tomorrow.

It must be costing them a fair few pennies with 2 recoveries so far, the weeks storage and then another recovery next week. Plus the vehicle hire and parts/ labour to come.

Not to mention the leaking seals in and around the gearbox/ clutch i shall ask them to sort out whilst they have it.

Thanks for the help

Not happy

Yep, I've joined the club.
My 02/08 GSA fails to start. Instruments displays the EWS fault.
I've ridden it once, that was home from the dealer. 500km away. 500km on the clock, and I cant ride it. Whats more, I have to trust someone to freight it to the dealer AND I have to get there to retrieve it.

30K for a new bike I cant ride, NOT HAPPY :spitfire

anybody got a part number for the ring antenna??
how much are they?

The ring antennas have changed part numbers, The cost is approx £70 I think but you need some extra bits too. If your bikes over two years old it shouldn't have this problem and under 2 yrs means it can be done under warranty anyway.

The Ring Antenna is indeed a common problem. I went on a tour to Switzerland with some 12 BMWs (GS, R, K) and we had 3 failures in 1 week, not all GS1200s. Luckily one of the guys with us owned a Swiss dealership, so we managed to get the bikes loaded and taken away quickly, but nevertheless a pain in the @rse.

TIP: If you are indeed stuck in the middle of nowhere and you get the problem, remove any other keys you may have on a key fob (magnetic fields can cause failure) and just try the ignition key alone. Also (and this sounds silly, but works), wheel the bike about 10 metres away from where the bike was standing - apparently magnetic waves can disturb the fields in the ring antenna, and a change of location, albeit small, can help.

These arent gonna completely solve the problem, because the error is registered in the bike's memory, but it may mean you can start the bike up again and get closer to a dealer.

Good luck

Interesting theory - fits with an EWS fault on my bike when stopped near a hydro power station with a field full of transformers. After a few on/offs it cleared

Would disconnecting the battery then clear the nuisance warnings and reset the brain?

I don't think so as the fault will be logged. If the fault is not present i.e. the bike has been moved from the interference then a recorded fault in the memory won't prevent it starting.

The advice about other keys on the fob is given the owner's handbook - I've heard of strong interference being radiated from the police Tetra tansmitters.

EM interference won't help the system contact the chip in the key via the ring antenna, but this system is common in many makes of car and also used on bikes by Honda (HISS) and you don't hear of them failing very often.
