EWS RECALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of interest, what is the view of the new "247" part? Has it cured the problem? Are there any recorded failures with the new part?

8 days since new "247" part fitted and the bike is still starting.....(Tempting fate:augie:augie)

Had my 6k service done at Vine's yesterday - they seemed very overworked (all the ring replacements I guess) and ran out of time to fit mine. They wanted to keep the bike another day to do it but I had to pick it up yesterday as I'm off to Denmark on it on Sat a.m.

Have I tempted fate?:blast

Already on my second ring and no probs with this one so far.

Darren at Vine's has said to book it in again when I get back so they can do the work as planned.

Wish I'd asked to be given the ring to take as a spare whilst I'm away now - I suppose we all have a degree in hindsight.

+1 thats why i asked had anyone else been told the same thing:confused:

Streaky, I was initially told the same thing when the campaign was first announced. On checking prior to the 6k service, mine was given the all-clear. I can only assume that you got the tip-off before all the information was available to the dealers, or that (as many have stated above), your bike details were updated on the system in the mean time.

I got told the same, 3 weeks ago at Hursts, for my Gs, May 06 reg.

Then i arrived on Monday 21st, waited about for an hour, then told NO, it's not on the list now.
seems the list has been "revised"

I've now got a spare under the seat, so hopefully not tempting fate.

Thanks for that mark,Hope all is well with the bike again:thumb2

The ring just failed on my 04 bike today, the thing is it is a new ring, it was replaced in January after some scrot tried to nick the bike, fecking thing didn't even last 6 months.

Mine went yesterday on my new 08 Adventure. Problem was I was in middle of nowhere in rural France.

3 and 1/2 hour wait for recovery at roadside in 33 deg heat, one hour at recovery garage waiting for taxi 50 miles back to where I am staying. Taxi cost 143 Euros which I had to fork out and claim back upon my return. They will tell me today whether or not I can have a hire car depending presumably whether the dealer has the part in stock.

The whole thing was really weird though - I was riding along and the bike started to slow so I turned to see smoke coming from rear brake, almost simultaneously lost engine power and the EWS warning came up. I cant see that the two issues are related but it sure is one hell of a coincidence!
I don't have ABS so at this stage have no idea what caused the brake to seize. Just glad I wasn't tanking down the Autoroute at the time.

First time I've been stuck at side of road with a BMW though in 30 years. Not good at all - bike has only 1000 miles on it and no-one mentioned any recall at 600 service.

BMW clearly have their heads in sand over this along with the fuel pump controller issue..

KTMs are starting look quite attractive.

M3GS, doesn't sound like the standard EWS problem. My understanding is that the EWS only affects the bike during the start up proceedure.

Hope everything get fioxed quickly. Let us know the outcome.

Stonedog,
BMUU brought out the "new" ring in May this year. The one you had replaced in January would not have been the "latest, new improved" version.

Tech at JC's let me have an old ring antenna this morning, got the bike started rode it in, they said it will be replaced under warranty. Think I might get a spare just in case.

Mine is in this morning at Pidcocks for its EWS ' Product Enhancement' and Brake Line 'fix'

Anyone in there this morning come and say hello, I will no doubt be sat by the vending machine drinking complimentary coffee's !!

Had Mine done at routine service last week by SLM not had a problem but done as mine was on the list ,my paranioa from this thread is less now!!:thumb2

Well got mine back today after an absolute nightmare. (see above).

Bike was recovered to dealer in Agen who basically said they were too busy to fix it. BuMW Assistance couldn't be bothered too much either so I stirred them up and they shipped the bike on Wednesday, one week later to dealer in Toulouse. This dealer did not have ring antenna in stock and so bike only finished today (Friday).

I then left hire car at dealer in Toulouse which caused BuMW Assistance (really Mondial) to have a throm as I should have taken it back to Hertz in Agen. Er, I don't think so! Agen to Toulouse is 75 miles and I don't have a bleeding Tardis...

Bottom line...

Bike off road for 9 days. Holiday totally screwed (not much fun driving a Meriva around the Pyrenees) and half of it spent waiting for phone calls which never came. BuMW Assistance are staffed mainly by people with indeterminate African accents (Obviously not located in UK) They never call you, so you have to call them from your mobile. They now tell me that I will have to pay the car hire as I did not drop it off back in Agen. I told them I would see them in court and that they couldn't manage the proverbial piss up let alone a simple breakdown in a civilised first world country.

I could go on but I would only bore the crap out of you.

Cheers

Apart from that, though, was everything ok? :D

I can't see how EWS could possibly have any impact on the rear brake, but the rear brake might have made the EWS play up. I know when my bike was usffering with fuel pump problems, I got the EWS warning a couple of times. Maybe overheated brake had an impact on speed sensor, which in turn buggered up the electrics.

Luckily my experience of the breakdown people (arranged through Carole Nash) and BMW dealer (in Austria) ws one of complete efficiency from start to finish.

I had the rear brake drag on my K1200RS a few years ago, which set fire to the gaiter. That was an interesting dismount...

Yes the brake pads were renewed and the disk cleaned and checked on a marble slab. eventually they found that the cause was incorrect play at the pedal, which seems to indicate the dealer at fault as it had only done a few hundred miles since 600 service. This cost me 111 Euro which I shall try to recoup from my dealer in UK. In retrospect I think that the two problems were unlinked and it was just coincidence.

EWS

Hi all,

I recently bought a 2007 GS Adventure (pre owned) from North Oxford Garage.

They fitted a new EWS for me prior to giving me the bike. I was told that BMW had identified a "faulty batch" (presumably by serial number) and were replacing them.

I have had no problem.

I agree with the initial post.........................top guys !!!

Ian

excuse me for sounding thick but this EWS malarky is it for ABS models only as my bike is not fitted with ABS but the EWS thingy shows on the panel as it goes through it's checks and the orange triangle always goes out .... thankfully

No, EWS is on all 1200s not just the ABS ones
