EWS RECALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know some of you guys have had the EWS changed cause you asked or have been for a service etc, but have any of your dealers in the UK been mailing or phoning people at their own initiative to take bookings for the fix?

Yup..AJ at Shipley organised my Ant Ring replacment, they did a software upgrade at the same time..:thumb

I ask, cause mine are still waiting on the special tool from BMW, or is this a yarn they are spinning.

My dealer here in the UK sent out a 'recall' notice clearly detailing what bikes required the replacement. They booked me in and did the job within a week.

OK lets try a slightly different question.

Is there anyone on the Nemezis list that has to have a replacement, but is still waiting to be notified by their dealer?

Yes, I'm on the list above and I've not yet been notified and have just started having problems

This weekend I've been on a trip to Ayr with some mates. I had the 'EWS!' failure last night after I'd filled up with fuel at ASDA, in Ayr, the bike just wouldn't start, I made several attempts switching ignition off and on. On the off chance that it may have been caused by interference in and around the filling station I pushed the bike 200 yards into the car park and it fired first time. I tried switching it off and on a few times and each time it fired up, so thought my assumption about interference was correct and breathed a sigh of relief.

However, the relief was short lived, on returning back to where we were staying I tried it again and the error reoccured.
I tried it several times and more often than not it failed to start, though if left for a short while it would generally start up. Realising that, with a full tank, if I chose a direct route home (to Lancaster) I should just about make it, I decided to leave well alone and in the morning, once loaded and suited up, give it another try, and if it started head straight home, non-stop, otherwise it would be a trip home courtesy of BMW Assist.

Well this morning, after breakfast, I got ready, switched igition on and damn! EWS! error. Gave it a second go after a few minutes and this time it fired up, so jumped aboard and headed for home.

Just need to get it fixed now.

I think the fault actually happened for the first time earlier in the day whilst waiting for some of our group to refuel at an Esso garage, but at the time I didn't check the display, I just switched off and on again and it fired up.

On this forum you hear of so many that have failed on garage forecourts it makes me wonder if mobile phone transmitters, that are sometime located in garage signage, blows something in the EWS antenna. Sometimes causing it to fail completely or, as in my case, work intermittently.
Mmm, I feel a poll coming on. ;)

I had a recall notice for the brake-line fault. When I phoned to book the appointment I queried if mine needed the EWS mod. Quess what? They're going to do both at the same time.

An observation - what about all those owners who don't keep up to date or choose not use sites like these?

Hi I have an 08 adventure as yet I've not had any problem or been told of any recall, But I am planning a trip for the end of September, I' ve read on this forum that some people advise on taking the spare key and a spare ring anntenna just in case the worst should happen (oh and some tape to secure the spare key) . Has anyone got a suitable part number and any idea of what I should expect to pay for the ring antenna?
regards
GibGSA

Thanks John, thats the Part number sorted. does anyone have an idea on what they cost..... roughly?

Thanks again John. Is that the most common fault or is the fuel pump controller as equally troublesome and therefore worthy of obtaining a spare.

I've got one of each :)

With the controller there is a way around it, look for Tim Cullis's thread, Antenna ring is a complete stopper if it goes. I guess some 13 year old from London would be able to get the bike going though.

Thanks John. I think I'll order one of each to be on the safe side.

GibGSA,

Your 08 may already have the new antenna part. Worth checking before you invest in a spare - touch wood, the new part seems to be a cure.

Fuel pump controller though - well worth having - might be worth seeing if your dealer would lend you one for your holiday.

Thanks Paul, however I'm a firm believer of 'Sods Law' so armed with that and a bit of luck, I reakon that if I go prepared for the worst, chances are (maybe) that I won't need the spares I'm carrying. Still, its better than being stuck on the side of the road after reading all 11 pages of this thread nowing full well that some of the poor guys affected were riding 08 adventures like mine, some even newer!

A big up to Southport Superbikes. :thumb2

I phoned Mondial this morning and they came and picked up my GS at 1300hrs and took it to Southport. I wasn't expecting any news for at least a couple of days, but Southport SB phoned me at 1730hrs to say it was ready (new EWS antenna fitted and software update) and Mondial would bring it back tomorrow. I can see how they got Rides best dealer award in the Reader Survey if this is how they treat all their customers, especially as I know through another source that they are pretty well booked up for the next month in the service dept.

I dont bloody believe it!!!!!!!

My EWS just went after 3400km exactly, on my 08 R1200GS Adventure. I'd just literally been for a ride to Ronda and Jimena in Spain, stopping at both towns, and on reaching Gib, I thought I'd top up at the petrol station. Went to start it, I always wait till the warning triangles go out, and ...........EWS appears on the screen and of course it won't start! :blast I had to push the bike about a km to my garage in 33 degree heat so I'm not a happy bunny at the moment.
Thing is I'm expecting BMW to ring me next week as I had pre ordered a Spare Ring Antenna, proper spare key and FPC just in case. I'll have to ring BMW Spain on Monday to find out how the bikes going to get to the workshop, (no BMW workshop in Gib).
What bothers me is that if they know they have a continuing problem with the ring antenna and can't fix it why do they keep on fitting them to new bikes or better still why don't they get the Japanese to make it for them!
Makes you wonder though if it only lasts 3400km or sometimes even less how many spares would you need to cross Africa!! my guess is a whole pannier full and thats without mentioning the dreaded FPC! No wonder LWD took two large support vehicles!!

Just in case anyone is wondering I don't have a bunch of keys flapping about, only the bike key and the remote alarm control which is wrapped in a canvas pouch to stop it from flapping around. The damm thing has just decided not to work anymore...its that simple.
Now that I know 'mines not any different from anyone elses' I don't think I could possibly have the confidence to ride this bike anymore without carrying a spare EWS and spare key in the pannier (and a spare FPC, when it arrives).

If only the japanese made GS's............................

And another one...

R1200GS March 2008 - 3838miles.

Was out checking out motorcycle parking spaces in Windsor prior to a visit next week. Pulled into a car park, found the bike bays logged the position in the GPS and then turned the ignition off whilst I changed the file name. Turned the bike back on and got the EWS! message :thedummy:thedummy:thedummy

Called BuMW assist and 90mins later SOS recovery turned up and took me home.

Bike is now parked up in my parents garage until I can phone BuMW assist in the morning and arrange to get it into SLM.

What's the position on BuMW providing replacement vehicles whilst original has broken down?

Thanks

Nigel
