Extended Warranty

My 1200, on a 55 plate with 24,000 on the clock, has extended warranty and BMW assistance, which is due to expire shortly. I bought the bike second hand from SLM and so far I've done about 10,000 miles in the year I've had it. Full service history etc. I intend keeping it for at least another 12 months.

Apart from a problem with the FD seal and the unit for the gear indicator, I have never had a problem and it hardly uses any oil.

Any advice then as to whether it is worth extending the warranty ?

It's insurance... and like any insurance, you'll never need it until something goes wrong. There's plenty of stuff here about likely problems, price them up and see how it compares to the extended warranty...

mine paid for itself pretty much straight away.

I got pissed off with my last one costing me money.....so I sold it. 18 months later I bought another, all at great expense. To avoid me getting pissed off with this one, I'll pay the warranty that I've already budgeted for. So hopefully no other major expense or worry. That's my logic and it may or may not suit you.

DONT FORGET YOU GET RECOVERY AS WELL, AT £300 ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY

The insurance industry survives because the overwhelming majority of people who buy policies do not make a claim.

I'll wager the majority of BMW motorcycles do not break down or require expensive repairs despite what you may read on this website.

Warranty insurance is expensive and probably only justifiable for people who worry a lot.

Yup get full europe brake down cover as well, and its a BMW group warranty, so if you final drive or fuel pump fails in Italy, a BMW dealer there will fix it for you under the warranty

after my experiances in europe, failed FPC (FIXED) and a failked final drive ( not fixed), recovery to BMw DEALERS, taxi over 100kms to Vienna airport, flight to Heathrow on BA, hire car to drive home and an offer to fly me out and collect the bike when its fixed, I will be paying again, just in case.

Looks like they make money on this scheme, they seem to have changed the rules from being a number of years to being all bikes under 80K miles. Would that perhaps imply that the number of failures in any year is roughly constant?

Extended Warranty?

I had this wonderful offer made to me as well.
At £360 per annum it is poor value until you read the small print.
Then you discover your heap of shit has to be serviced by a BMW dealer to keep the warranty valid.
In my case that is 2 services per annum at a cost of ( at least) £300 each.
So £960 per annum for a warranty.
No chance.
At that money it would be cheaper to burn it & claim if it broke down.

No: I bought a spare Fuel pump controller & antenna ring. Replaced the antena ring security bolts with allen screws.
Carry them with me at all times.
I also bought a spare rear hub off ebay.
Very little else goes wrong, though say you do a biggie & drop a valve, it is still cheaper to buy the bits off motorworks & fix it yourself than to have a warranty.

I reckon it's horses for courses... if you aren't confident about doing repairs at the roadside yourself with the parts you carry round, then maybe the extended warranty is worth it.

I didn't extend the warranty when the initial 2 years expired on my bike, and about 11 months later the ABS modulator failed. If BMW hadn't allowed me a goodwill free replacement part I would have been £1,500 out of pocket. As it was, I just paid for the labour, which was about the same as the £360 extended warranty costs... so just about even. Replacing the ABS modulator is beyond my technical skills.

So, I decided to take out extended warranty this year for peace of mind, pleased that it included European recovery services.
