Final Drive Failure Register

Ive had the final drive go at about 24, 30, 45, 62, and 72k- a couple of times its taken out the gearbox output bearing....

Hi Pat, what do you mean when you say you had the final drive 5 times (24, 30, 45, 62 & 72).....

Can you be more specific, I mean what did you change all these times?

Pat, from what I know usually problems are solved after a qualified repair by a BMW workshop, sometimes one follow up is needed. 5 times would be embarrassing. This number fully qualifies in Germany for a 1 : 1 exchange with a new product.

Hi Dr KC.

The works were all covered under the warranty- that Ive religiously renewed each year since Ive had the bike- I didn't think they would still cover my bike due to the age and mileage last time- as its coming up for its 5th birthday.
The first one was a complete replacement with a new final drive unit
the 2nd and 3rd were rebuilds by SLM of Caterham- where I brought the bike brand new- it was at this time that the gearbox was replaced- then a week of so later, as the gearbox was found to be leaking!
the 4th was replaced by Coopers of Tunbridge- Wells- that was a re-build FD.
The most recent one- so that means 5, not four- was a brand new FD- I had to wait a week for it to come from Germany (no spares, I suppose- as BMW don't expect fools like me to ride this time of year :) )

So, if I'm correct- this one will be a seal replacement- unless they do a failure under warranty of the part- as Ive only done 3k on it.
The bikes nearly coming up to 75k miles now.
I don't wheelie it, I don't thrash it- but I do 50/50 motorway miles versus heavy traffic miles- so I'm wondering if the constant clutch-snatching is killing it.
For what its worth- my bike does not look like its covered this sort of mileage, as I look after it, clean it each week. Its got minor corrosion on some of the casings- Ive had the timing-chest cover replaced under warranty last year- cos I moaned!
Ive had the ignition switch go- at 68k
Ive had 2 sets of stick-coils go
So all in all- its been a good soldier for its 5 years of daily-use

Ive given as much history detail as possible- as my tale seems implausible.

Rgds

On a 2006 GSA I had 4 FD's !!!!!

One at 25,0000
One at 43,000
One at 63,000

And the forth one is still on it (I think as I sold the bike) with 97,000 on the clock and a recipt for it given to the new owner.

All replaced by BMW at their expence with the last two well out of warranty so thumbs up to them (Oxford BMW).

Own a 2009 GSA now and no FD failures yet.

My original unit bearings failed and replaced at 42k, replaced with secondhand from Motorworks, which started to leak at 43k.
Just fitting my third unit tonight.

This looks like it's part of the rear plate on the back of the casing, is this retro - fittable to an older drive unit?
Can you fill the unit through here as opposed to the ABS sensor hole?

My first - finally

I have finally got round to the last common R12GS failure that I hadn't had yet. The FD was replaced today by NOG BMW under the extended warranty. The first of many? Let's just review what has gone so far:

Speedo failure
Oil leak onto the clutch
Another clutch failure
Front engine cover corrosion
Fuel pump relay failure
Rear drive seal failure
Rear wheel carrier cracking
Rear frame cracking
Headlight unit adjuster failure (twice)
Right side exhaust valve dropped into cylinder
Rear disc chewed up in 2000 miles flat

The only one missing: EWS failure (I have the spare)

Did I miss one?

Speedo failure
Oil leak onto the clutch
Another clutch failure
Front engine cover corrosion
Fuel pump relay failure
Rear drive seal failure
Rear wheel carrier cracking
Rear frame cracking

The only one missing: EWS failure (I have the spare)

Did I miss one? - Still love it:bounce1

Brake line recall

You also missed the brake line recall. My bike was booked in to get the recall done, but the brake line didn't last that long and spewed brake fluid all over the bike (during my IAM test, no less).

Passed the test anyway :D...

Yes, You did miss one- Clutch leaver jamming on hand-guards! alathough BMW solved it by issuing a couple of skickers for you to put inside the guards...

36k?:- sunday rider!

When cheeky sod subscribe to forum, abuse give can he. Actually I ride every day and I didn't get the brake/handguard one cos I check each time I ride.

An' me!

Had an annual service at Cotswold today. "Sir - did you know your rear final drive bearing is fecked?! We can't MOT it without doing the work":blast

New one fitted whilst I waited fully funded by Bracknell.:D

2008 GSA with 14,600 miles on the clock.

Felt much better riding home!:thumb

Another seal just gone.
1st unit bearings failed at 42k, unit scrapped, unrepairable.

2nd unit, LHS inner seal failked at 43k, unit exchanged under warranty from Motorworks.

3rd unit, the RHS outer seal on my at 44k.

Getting a bit cheesed off now. :(

on FD 4 and think its on its way out bikes done 39000miles last fd has done 3000 ish miles all covered on extended warranty on rear shock no3 and its gone too last one done on good will but dont know whether this one will be covered but its only done about 4000ish

Had 1st FD bearing replacement at 19,500 with the bike 51 weeks old and advised that BMW had replaced the bearing with a new up rated version.

New up rated version just replaced at 29,000 with the bike 18.5 months old i.e. 10,000m and 5.5 months less than the OEM and so called inferior replaced bearing.

Is this what's known as reverse engineering?

mine has just had rear shock number 3,on its third battery,1 rear wheel,1front engine cover 4 fuel sensors.and front brake mods in 20,000 miles.if any more goes tits up its going.

Took my 2007 GSA (26000 miles) in for a service at NOG on Friday.

Was given the bad news that my final drive had BIG problems, but not the 'usual' failure. They were unable to get the rear part of the drive disconnected.

They contacted BMW as I have the extended warranty and they agreed the claim immediately (£1500)...............the best £33 a month over the last 18months or so I have ever spent.

Picking it up next Saturday.

p.s...................Thanks NOG for your efforts and service (Chris)
