Yeah loads go for 1000's without a problem , just keep an eye on it and maybe change the fd oil , what made you change from a blade ??![]()

"Nothing to worry about: they all do that, sir."
But seriously: the only bikes that don't have this problem are the garage queens.
Achim
3 FD failures on 2008 GS (I got rid of it after the third fuel pump controller failure. BMW is now on FPC v9 - how stupid a design is this??? Must be a record of some description...)
no failures on 2011 GS (but it's only done 1,500m so far)

In fact, most of the high milers I know have never had a problem so I'll put it the other way...the ones that don't get ridden have the issue although I suspect in reality it's fairly random.GSA 08
12000 miles
FD covered under warrenty six weeks before it expired.
I have a 08 GSA which I bought in March with only 10000km, service history and garaged.
I took on a trip to Eastern Europe and Norway and after 12000 km had bike serviced in Thessalonaka Greece by BMW where I had to replace rear wheel bearings as they were very rough
I couldn't quite understand the German trained chief mechanic but I think he implied that if I even drove a short distance more the final drive or wheel could fail badly
Is this the first symptom of FD failure
The cost of replacing both bearings seals and labour was about €350 on top of other work @24000km service
When mine goes its either
a) noisy
b) oil all over back wheel
c) seizes on the motorway at about 70mph
d) Dealer spots it on service and states- you aint riding that home from here!
Ive had at least 5 gone on my GS but glutton for punishment, after 86k miles, Im getting my replacement bike in a week or so and its another GS! I love 'em- I dont know what bike would put up with the punishment I dose out, all weathers, every day. My advice- keep the serice and warany up and it wont cost on repairs.

five? in 86K??
that must be some kind of record. some contributory factor perhaps?

Pretty much any Jap bike will hapily do 100 miles a day and clock up 86k without 5 major mechanical failures, I know of lots of ZZR's that have topped 100k (600's, 1100's, 1200's) VFR's and Blackbirds will also reliably reach 100k and last month I met a young lad on a 150k GS500.
Stop start use is normally worse, with a nice long run twice per day I would expect any bike or car to clock up 100k with no major issues.
I used a CX500, a Suzi 600 GSX, a CBR100, a ZXR400, and in 2001 my beloved R1- Oh, and a Daytona. The Beema has been the best despite the FD failures. Nothing has ever gone wrong with the engine. More than I can say for the ZXR, the Suzi and the CBR.
But an FD every 15k works out about the same cost per mile as fuel, I don't fancy a bike that every time I put £20 of fuel in it I then have to put £20 in the "FD fund".
Did they go at pretty even mileages?
