Yeah loads go for 1000's without a problem , just keep an eye on it and maybe change the fd oil , what made you change from a blade ?? :thumb

"Nothing to worry about: they all do that, sir."

But seriously: the only bikes that don't have this problem are the garage queens.

Achim

3 FD failures on 2008 GS (I got rid of it after the third fuel pump controller failure. BMW is now on FPC v9 - how stupid a design is this??? Must be a record of some description...)
no failures on 2011 GS (but it's only done 1,500m so far)

Some good news

So got the bike back today, and BMW payed the EUR 1400 and fitted the new rear drive, en though out of warranty (3 month over) so I am happy .....

But lost around 4 weeks of riding, which over hear is 1/6 of the year .....

I was sick of being in the fetal position all the time - getting cramp and all that...

Plus, I was forever racing the thing... even when picking up a loaf of bread :D

Since I bought the GS (less than a week!) I've just loved it... riding round the dales through narrow winding roads - brilliant, and I'm quite happy doing 50 mph which was painful on the Fireblade :augie

3 FD failures... crikey, not surprised you traded it in... hope you have more luck with the 2011... :thumb

I guess you've just go to get on with it, no point worrying about it... and deal with it if it ever happens

outer bearing gone corrosion on the crown bearing and shaft.

Really??? 68k on my 06 ADV and the FD is perfect. I've been on and off road, across the US twice, all weathers from -10c to + 50c and to 13,000ft, it lives outside and it gets ridden hard. Hardly a garage queen..........:augie In fact, most of the high milers I know have never had a problem so I'll put it the other way...the ones that don't get ridden have the issue although I suspect in reality it's fairly random.

I'll be having my fd rebuilt by Scrimmiger this winter because it's probably due and I've got 30k to do on it next year:thumb

Wheel Bearings?

I have a 08 GSA which I bought in March with only 10000km, service history and garaged.
I took on a trip to Eastern Europe and Norway and after 12000 km had bike serviced in Thessalonaka Greece by BMW where I had to replace rear wheel bearings as they were very rough
I couldn't quite understand the German trained chief mechanic but I think he implied that if I even drove a short distance more the final drive or wheel could fail badly
Is this the first symptom of FD failure
The cost of replacing both bearings seals and labour was about €350 on top of other work @24000km service

When mine goes its either
a) noisy
b) oil all over back wheel
c) seizes on the motorway at about 70mph
d) Dealer spots it on service and states- you aint riding that home from here!

Ive had at least 5 gone on my GS but glutton for punishment, after 86k miles, Im getting my replacement bike in a week or so and its another GS! I love 'em- I dont know what bike would put up with the punishment I dose out, all weathers, every day. My advice- keep the serice and warany up and it wont cost on repairs.

five? in 86K??

that must be some kind of record. some contributory factor perhaps?

Not really- I do about 100 m per day and Ive currently a clean licence! Two were because they (BVMW Dealer) got it wrong and the gearbox went...twice..I think the in-house-rebuilds lasted the shortest. My journey is 50/50 traffic/motorway and I dont think they like the traffic bit much. Most people on here dont use thier bikes, or if they do- they replace them regualry. My current one thats going is an 06.
The Mechs in the present Dealer have said that its the achillies heel of the GS and its not been resolved..

Pretty much any Jap bike will hapily do 100 miles a day and clock up 86k without 5 major mechanical failures, I know of lots of ZZR's that have topped 100k (600's, 1100's, 1200's) VFR's and Blackbirds will also reliably reach 100k and last month I met a young lad on a 150k GS500.

Stop start use is normally worse, with a nice long run twice per day I would expect any bike or car to clock up 100k with no major issues.

the final drive on my '07 12500 mile (owned since september last year when it had done 7500k) 1200gs has failed :eek

it's been noisy for a while but the 2600 mile trip i've just done has seen it off.

deciding how best to resolve the situation at the moment :nenau

I used a CX500, a Suzi 600 GSX, a CBR100, a ZXR400, and in 2001 my beloved R1- Oh, and a Daytona. The Beema has been the best despite the FD failures. Nothing has ever gone wrong with the engine. More than I can say for the ZXR, the Suzi and the CBR.

But an FD every 15k works out about the same cost per mile as fuel, I don't fancy a bike that every time I put £20 of fuel in it I then have to put £20 in the "FD fund".

Did they go at pretty even mileages?

I think the first one went at about 17k, the second at about 30. the 3rd at about 60 and the last was about 72- but Im guessing. I know I sent a good 2 hours on the M23 in December at the last incidence. As for cost- hasnt cost me a penny as the bikes mine from new and Ive always taken the Waranty option year-on year. They dont offer it after 75k.
Actaul running sost have been light- it will blow a set of skick-coils every 18 months, tires I get 2 sets of Tourance fitted per year- any other breakdown, switches failing, the side stand switch, the gearbox switch- all done under Warantee.
