Final Drive Failure Register

Have never used pressure washer on the bike, only ever used a low pressure hose with a rose attatchment.I was asked by BMW dealer if I had ever used the bike off road or in water, what a question, surely the bike was designed for it.The bike has never been off road so I'm disappionted on the reliability.

Seem to have seen the word "Unstoppable" somewhere in BMW literature :augie

Rear drive

2007 GSA is now on Bearing set No 4

18k
22k
31k

Not impressed rear drive on the Unstoppable GS???? But it is a great bike to ride, However loyality to BMW is wearing thin.:rob
Starting to look elsewhere.

Third one gone

Third final drive just went. 160,000 kilometers. BMW have given up on me and told me I have to pay. Only thing is, there are not any F/D in Australia. When my first one went I was in Darwin and they would not fly the F/D up as they were afraid the pressure in the plane would cause the seals to leak ? It was sent by road. Cant figure that one out. How much are they in the UK ? Ive been quoted $3000 plus labour and I expect bearings etc. Thats 1966 pounds. They would have to fly it out though?

Ibve just got a 2011 GSA after 90 k in 5 years on a GS with 4 Fd failures- Im told by the chaps at my Dealership that failure is now a thing of the past with the newer version. Im waranteed, and will be so for the duration of my ownership...just in case..

I think you can generally expect the FD bearing to last 25-30K before replacing it. Personally I don't have a huge problem with that. It's a bearing! it will wear:nenau £ 2-300 to replace it and off you go. Not really more expensive than chains & sprockets except about 2 1/2 years of never having to adjust one or oil one.Suits me:thumb
Although the 1150 FD bearing does last about 10k longer apparently. But is pig ugly :D

Here we go again, this is the second time the final drive on my 2011 R1200 GS has spewed oil over the rear wheel.I only noticed it after returning from Scotish tour on Sunday. It could have resulted in a big off.I cleaned the oil off the tyre and rim then rode the bike to my local dealer.(approx 20 miles)The bike has 11500 plus miles on it.The oil has been ejected from a breather on the FD.The dealer is going to investigate.Hope to have her back at weekend. All confidence in reliability is now lost.

Oh dear- despite me being told the drive issues were fixed, it seems not! Ive got 18k and just about to go for a service friday- as we all know, the drive fails without warning. I /we will be interested to see what Your Dealer does/says/charges. When I was in my Dealer last, with the subject of warantee claims being discussed, there was a general pesimistic view and clearly Mondial were trying to limit the spend buy pressurising the Dealers to fight claims- I can see the logic, but not from a riders perspective.

Could it not have been overfilled with oil, if only coming out of the breather:nenau

Dealer rang me on Tuesday and stated FD had been overfilled.Joe Duffy BMW of Dublin were responsible because they repaired the first failure at only 5000 miles. My bike is at Charles Hurst BMW Newtonabbey and I'm going to collect her tomorrow night.I've already been told its not covered under warrantee but will take it up with the manager. The FD must have been overfilled when I bought then for to fail at 5000 miles.

its me. should have it couple of weeks. i wouldnt be paying nothing for them to sort it out, bmw s problem. thats what the warranty is for. still the big 12 gs is still the daddy of the big adventure bikes.

Heres the latest from the dealer after some investigation:The final drive hasn't actually failed. It was discovered that there has been an ingress of water into the FD.The total mixture of oil and water was 400ml which is double the recommended oil capacity. You cannot overfil the FD with oil because the filler hole is in the horazontal plane so excess oil would pour out.The only possible access point for the offending water is through the breather, hence Joe Duffy BMW of Dublin are totally exonerated,I apologise unreservidly to J.D. BMW for my assumptions.Twice the same fault has manifested itself(5000 mls and 11000+ mls) I wash the bike thoroughly on a weekly basis but would state that I'm not overzealous with the hose. When the extra fluid is ejected from the FD it covers the rear tyre rendering the bike dangerous. The ingress of water must be small but over a period of time eventually exceeds the FD capacity. The bike is due a 12000 mile service soon so the dealer will check FD for water ingress.I think the breather should be designed so that no ingress of water is possible. The dealer did not charge me for the investigative work that was carried out and there service proved to be beyond reproach. Thanks to BMW Newtonabbey.

Got bike back from dealer 10-6-12 after 12000 mile service. In my original post an after market hugger was blamed for the ingress of water, this has subsequently been removed.Hopefully all should now be ok.I will keep an eye on FD and post again if any more problems.

2007 R1200GSA 29,000 miles

Outside seal has failed twice

First Final Drive failure - only the large bearing is goosed but for peace of mind Mototech are going to replace all the bearings and both seals

The rubber boot ahead of the FD is also split, I'm informed that these used to be £75 to replace but BMW have reduced them to £37

Hopefully pick up the FD on Friday:aidan

I suppose I should put mine on here too

all in 16,000 miles, Clean and tidy Well maintained but not immaculate FD oil changed every service replaced with specified oil

Main bearings have zero play but the needle roller Input bearing has wear allowing the input shaft to run out of true and cause driveshaft vibration

This bike also had the pretty much terminal RH cylinder Ex valve failure
