the final drive on my 2004 gs (18000 miles) has started weeping oil on the left hand side, it's not leaking badly and it's not making any funny noises and is working fine. Would it be ok to just keep it topped up or get it fixed. I heard that they don't fix them but put a new one on at stupid money, which I ain't got. :(

Sounds very much like it could be just the seal - which is only about 100 pounds... still expensive but a lot less than the 1000 pounds for a new FD!

+1... its only the seal. Less than £100 if you get the part and ask a specialist to fit it instead....

If it is the one that Skorpion has linked above then it is £10 ish from the dealer and about 15 mins start to finish.

Did it on my bike last week. Keep it on the side stand to stop the oil running out.

Dead easy.

From his 1st post it seems he is describing the inner seal, the big one behind the disk carrier flange thing, thats a bit more of a job to do as it requires the flange removing with heat and a puller.

Leaking FD seal

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll get hold of a sral and give it a go next weekend, hopefully that will cure the problem. It'll keep me out of the pub for a while if nothing else :augie

Hey must be a common fault but my seal is on the right hand side and at 18000 miles to but my stead is only 2years old  but its being fixed by dealer at the 18000 service under xtended warranty its paying off already.Must admit though this seems to be the weak point in bmws armour (drivetrain nightmares):blast but gladly ive got it covered :JB
