Every time I try and start Firefox, I get the message: "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I've uninstalled Firefox and downloaded a new 'copy' (3.6) but still the same message.

This is my standalone PC: I'm the only administrator, but I don't know what to do.

Pleeeeease help.

I'm having to use IE to do this and I hate it!

Mate I'm no wizkid but I use Firefox on my home pc and when it goes wrong, this always works for me. Open yor task manager by right clicking on the blue tool bar on the bottom of the screen and select task manager, click "processes" the click "image name to put them in order, find Firefox highlight it and then click end process.

It might work, and if it doesn't it won't do any harm

BEWARE _ THIS MAY KILL IT

using Regedit

so usual caveats there!!!

=============
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

Change value of "NoBrowserOptions" from 1 to 0.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel

Change value of "Homepage" from 1 to 0.
====================

Did you install a new spyware prog or antivirus?
Usual culprits...

No good

Thanks for the suggestion, but no good. Firefox isn't in the list, but that's probably because it isn't currently a running process?

More help needed please!

Sorry, no good was to Andy6760.

As to Regedit..... I'm a numpty, so bit scared of that as it sounds a bit techy.

Surely there's something easier to do with this 'administrator' thing?

Will

No, nothing new put on, or taken off. The fact that it says 'ask administrator' does that mean some where in the administrator's controls there's some sort of bar on using Firefox Perhaps?

It's driving me mad!

Try running it as Administrator.

Right click on the Firefox icon, click on the tab 'Compatibility'

At the bottom of this tab check the box marked 'Run this program as an administrator', then click 'Apply'

Now try opening Firefox

I had an issue similar when I bought my new anti-virus, I think it was because both Windows AND Norton spam/pop-up/firewall were "on" at the same time...

Hi Slick,

Back in the office and was just going to try your tip, but there isn't an option of "run this programme as administrator" on the bottom of the compatibility tab!

I'm running WinXP

Any other ideas?

Still no good... gonna smash the bloody thing

Hi Slick, thanks for that. Trouble is, when I right click (this time while holding shift key) I get the 'run as' option, but when I click that it just gives me the dreaded message again!

"this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

The only way i can get firefox to run, is reinstall it every morning, and when I click 'finish' with the 'launch firefox now' box ticked it does start. I then leave it running all day!

Not exactly great!!!

Bit of hunting around suggests you may have a corrupted registry file. There are a few sites (inc Microsoft) offering a fix, but unless you know exactly what your doing I don't think I'd recommend messing with the registry.

One alternative would be to do a System Restore, basically rolling the computer back to a point where it didn't have the problem (you may have to go back a bit, but I believe your able to select which 'Restore Point' date you want). Windows XP has that function and there's an article here explaining how too:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

Looks a little daunting at first but is actually fairly straightforward, you don't lose your documents and stuff, although I'd suggest you uninstall Firefox before you do the roll back then download it from new and re-install it.

Just had a few probs with Firefox myself and uninstalling as above sorted it.

Still no good!

thanks slick, for your continued help, but it's still not sorted. I did the 'system restore' thing and reinstalled FF yet again. (mind you I'm doing that every morning at the mo!

The skip beckons for the bloody thing!
