JDB : Electrical wiring problem, please help

Dear all,
new to the gser but had GSs since the 80s. can any electrical engineers out there with knoledge of VDO unis tell me the correct wire match on a GSpd tacho. ive got yellow, brown and black. - i assume the brown is earth but which of the yellow or black is signal and +ve??? Hope you can help.

Thanks for the reply - no ive been confused by it for a while. I am trying to fit a late gs PD rev counter to a 85 gs but the wire on the tacho dont correspond to any bmw diagrams - prob because its got VDO colours. What GSs have you??

Thanks for the help, yes checked the books - i think the wiring diagrams dont help as they do not include wiring colours on the clocks themselves. Ive got a r80gs 1985 of which i want to fit a late large R100gs pd tacho. The colours on the r80 harness are simple - black signal, brown earth etc ets, however the later large clock i want to fit (a VDO) has a brown wire, a yellow and a black. This is where it might get confusing as black on a 80s bmw is usually coil (signal) i am not sure which of the yellow or the black on the clock wires are signal and dont want to blow the unit. i know it might sound like the wiring diagram might help but they do not show the wiring colours on the clocks themselves only up to the con`.
