Had 600-mile service. £190!!!

Most of the parts cost was engine oil, but the labour cost was £72 + VAT. Not bad for an hour's work!

Was able to give it more of a free rein on the way home though!

£150 at my local dealer

beer must be more expensive down there

First service on my RS was much cheaper. I was told that BMW pay for labour and I only pay for fluids. Was less than £100.

It varies - my dealer caps the first service at £100 for the GS/A, though I had it thrown in as part of the deal anyway.

How much do you think a typical employee has to earn for an employer to cover over heads?
£72 plus vat is about right. Oil prices are salty though.

No help in this instance, but I always change pads, air filter, plugs etc before it goes in and the dealer stamps it for the oil change.

My 600 mile service was FOC. Coopers of Sunderland. got 1.5k off exclusive TE RRP too. obviously because new model was coming out.

Was this your GS and if so, please could you advise which dealer ?

£68 for engine oil, lot less for final drive. I'm not really complaining, I was very happy with the deal I got on the bike in the first place. They have to make a profit, and those expensive tiled floors in the showroom don't pay for themselves, I'm sure. On previous new bikes (I haven't had a new bike since 2005) I've haggled to get the first service included, and on used bikes always asked for the next service to be done gratis before I bought it. But this one caught me by surprise...

Changing engine oil and final drive oil is child's play - for unconnected reasons I've already changed the final drive oil once! - but the only thing stopping me doing it myself is the fear of a catastrophic breakdown and BMW saying "You didn't get it serviced..."

(I know that hourly rates for employees can be almost double for employer. But when my radiographer wife earns £16 an hour for a shift job requiring a 4-year degree, I rather suspect that the mechanic isn't seeing too much of the £72!)

It went like a train on the way home. I thought I'd thrashed it a couple of times, but the App tells me I didn't go past 7,500 rpm. I am officially a wuss.

I service my 1250GS myself
For the 10,000 km service I bought oil from BMW - just over € 20 per litre !!

This year I just bought the same oil for € 6.00 per litre from a German internet seller !!

So it’s not just on labour rates that you get shafted

That could be a new tag line.

“BUY A GS AND GET SHAFTED....IN EVERY WAY” :-)

Contrarywise, with previous BMWs I've done the oil and filter, air filter, final drive oil myself, and asked the dealer to do bits that are a bit more complicated (brake fluid and, counter-intuitively, spark plugs on one bike). They were always happy to stamp the book. I've always changed brake pads myself.

Yes, the 1250GS and Arden BMW, Tunbridge Wells.

For the first time ever at Tunbridge Wells, the bike was taken through to workshop and was ready when they said it would be! The previous incarnation of the dealership (Coopers) were good on occasion but for services it was usually the case that when I returned to collect the bike at the time they said it would be ready, it was parked up outside to give the illusion that it was done. Then they'd say "Yes, we're just about to take it through now..." And if I went home or to work with the promise "We'll call you as soon as it's done" I would end up having to call them at 4:30 then have a mad dash to get there before they shut at 5:30! However, as I always had a free loan bike, it was an excuse to use it freely.

(I used Park Lane in London back in 2005 when I was working in London, as it was just a short trip on the tube to get to work from there. Called them mid afternoon to be told it was ready for collection. Got there at 5 to be told it was just being finished. Waited til 5:30 and was then asked to leave because they were closing the showroom. I asked where I should wait for my bike and they said I'd have to come back in the morning. Refused to give me a loan bike. Big argument followed but I genuinely think they would have locked me in the showroom for the night if I hadn't left! Needless to say, I never darkened their door again!)

If you're buying from Arden - or indeed any dealer - it might be worth arguing over the labour costs of the first service. But you just know that what you gain on the roundabouts you'll lose on the swings.

So all in all, Arden are doing OK by comparison.

Could be worse. I paid £28 for a 3 minute check up in the dentist the other day.

Makes an oil change seem cheap.

Ok price and you get stamp for warranty, most important.

Thanks, reason for the question is my experience with Park Lane. :(

Just paid €185 for the first service. Oil only was €125. That is ridiculous price for oil. I love the bike but as soon as it gets out of 3 years warranty it'll be serviced by me or one friend of mine that owns Suzuki dealer.

My first service was carried out by Coopers in T Wells just before the change to Arden, agreed at sale as being not chargeable, so a cost I didn’t see, bike dropped off and had a phone call a couple of hours later, hope the change to Arden will still be good.
