I'm interested in fitting some of these - a few questions:

1) How much are they ?
2) Which colours are available
3) Crucially (given my width restricted shed) how much width do they add to the cylinder heads

cheers

1) Can't remember what I paid - but got mine from Motoworks.
2) Black & (I think) silver?
3) Adds just under 40mm (each side) to the width of the engine.

Hope that helps.

Phil,

1) About £100 inc VAT
2) I think black, chrome and 'brushed silver'.
3) A bit - see above

Mike:)

Thanks gentlemen

Mike & Ralphy

cheers for info - i think it'll make it too much aggro with the extra width with my brick shed.

I guess I'll stick with useless BMW head covers

cheers

Phil

How do you manage to get the bike in the shed at the moment, as I'm sure the handlebars are wider than the H & B bars will be??
Regards,
Charles

I seem to remember/think that Phil fitted R1100R bars when he first got his bike.

(I could be absolutely wrong of course, in which case, I apologise).

many thanks Simon for the instructions. It took about 3/4 s of an hour to fit, but made slight adjustment to the fitting order, with mine I found it easier to place the two rear bolts loosely first then place the front bolt last, as there is more flex in the front section of the bars thus enabling easier manipulation by hand to locate the bolt.

cheers

Engine bar fitting

Thanks for the info on fitting the Hepco and Becker bars, it took me about an hour altogether, you,re right about the subframe dropping. They're on and lookin good....:) :)

Hi Simon
Thanks for the excellent instructions, managed it in less than an hour on my own. Subframe dropped on the first side and had to jack it up, so jacked up the other side before I took the bolt out and had no problems.
Cheers:D

Many Thanks Simon. I fitted the HB bars today on my '04 1150GS. Would have been a great bit more difficult without your instructions.

I had a tough time lining everything up for the right rearmost bolt at the top of the foot peg diamond. I found that the tubular portion of the bike frame that hangs down was the part that wasn't lining up. I used a 1/4 nut driver and screw driver to gain leverage on the tube and was finally, with a little sweating and dirty talk, to get the bolt in and seated.

The left side took all of 15 minutes, as the rearmost bolt lined up perfectly without any coaxing. the left also went a little quicker, as I had the experience from the right side bar to guide me. The total job took me about an hour.

BTW, the bolt thread lube really helps the job. I didn't have any Copper Ease (which was suggested on the UKgser site), so used some WD 40.

The left side bar makes very slight, but postive, contact with the inside of the gas tank. I didn't like this metal on metal contact, so put some black electrian's tape around the crash bar at the point of contact. The right side bar clears everything just fine.

Gotta say a...

BIG thanks to the "Prof", without his excellent instructions I wouldn't have even bought H&B bars...

Come to think of it, H&B should buy the copyright from the Prof as his pdf file contains the best instructions on the net!.

:beerjug: Cheers Prof:beerjug:

Thanks!!!!

Simon,

Thank you very much for posting these excellent instructions. I ordered a set of these H&B bars for my '00 GS and was completely lost when I opened the German instruction page. I might have stumbled through on a trial basis, but KNOWING exactly what to do and where to place the differing dimension spacers surely saved me a lot of time and cuss fits. I owe you a tall cold one! :beerjug:

Best,

A big thank you

Simon. bars arrived this morning. Just finished fitting them... just over 1.5 hours.
Managed to do them on my own. No real problems other than difficulty getting out the original middle RH side bolt.

Loosely bolted front and middle bolts... the RH rear aligned perfectly. The LH rear needed a little bending but nothing too drastic.

Without your excellent guide I think I would have screwed up big time... so thanks a lot Simon... if we meet up I owe you a few

Many thanks for comprehensive instructions - H&B should take note! Their website is rubbish.

Bank holiday weekend coming up - hopefully they'll be fitted by then!

Cheers.

Rust

The bars are rubbish also.

I have had mine for 2 Winters and they are rusting quite badly at the joints.

I will have to take them off and have them repainted

Hi Simon

I'm thinking of fitting H&B bars to my 1100GS.

I've read your pdf and would appreciate the one you mentioned with the piccies. Bit of a mechanical novice, torque wrench sounds like a nasty wrestling injury to me, but with the pics I might just be able to swing it. Don't have a shed/garage for the work (do have awful wooden thing in garden that would make a height challenged leprechaun claustraphobic), so I'd take this on in the street, doable or should I just bring it to my local BMW dealer (Wollaston in Northhampton)?
If so whats a reasonable price for the labour (assuming I buy the bars from motobins?)

Reading some of the responses to your thread it would appear either a brilliant idea to protect the bike, or madness likely to bring down biblical plagues and wrath upon my bike and me:confused:

However my bike, my decision so I think I'd go for the bars as a low speed spill or static fall over seems much more likely that a high speed shunt, in which case I could care less about the bike and am much more concerned about my own Irish hide, not the German panzer, that's what Carol Nash is for isn't she?

Thanks again

Eugene

Take one complete Muppet,
one set of Hepco bars,
a new GS,
add a set of superb instructions,

allow to work for 40mins.

and voila

A gs with shiny new bars. :) :)

Thanks for spending the time to produce a great guide.

Fitted to my 99 1100.
Re front fitting under tank,I had to undo instument subframe and mount HB bars inboard of them.(Outboard fitting didnt allow tank to slide forward on to rubber mounting points.)
Is this correct?
Also at front of engine (where both bars bolt together),the rearmost points of the two bolted flanges are making contact and scoring engine case, slight cosmetic issue but annoying and broken paint will no doubt allow rust to take hold.Any ideas on how to bring it forward. It only appears to
require a few mills or should the distance be greater.
Must say that in silver they blend very well
with the rest of the bike and really finish it off.

Just about to give em a shot..

Well i have kindly been offered and bought some brand new H&B bars and have downloaded the instructions..

Now problem is i dont have a Jack, to support the rear, and so I think I may give my local ( non BMW) dealer a shot at a price quote for fitting. If its scary will consider doing it my self... I will see how it goes..

But wanted to say thanks for the instruction as they look pretty good and are thankfully not in german..

Cheers

John aka rocks..
