I was just wondering if anyone has had the same problem as myself with insurance. I have fitted a Remus header to my R1200GS and informed my present insurance company. Not a problem. However my insurance cover has gone up 48 % with Carole Nash so I thought I would give BMW Motorrad a ring. Very good price, but out of courtesy mentioned the Remus. Sorry Sir we can not cover you......Insurance refused. Do I put the OEM system back, I don't want to as the Remus makes it such a different bike to ride, more responsive.

Anyone else had the same problem

Could be interesting for me then, just fitted a Remus header to my 1200 and written to BMW Motoradd Insurance to advise them of the same.

Shame Ebike turned out to be such twunts about claims, their online modifications advising was a useful thing.

I have just changed to Carole Nash having been with BMW before. With BMW I had all my mods declared including an independant garage report they wanted - this included Remus headers and Akra can. Moving to Carole Nash I went through and have all my mods declared with them, including the Remus and Akra. No issues. They work out the additional cost of the insurance based on the replacement value - I have 4K of additional stuff on my bike when looking at new replacement pricing.

They are only interested if the performance upgrade is greater than 5% which I don't believe is the case with the headers/Akra without adding a PC. I stand to be corrected by this forum though and am prepared to eat humble pie and put the oem back on....... My online quote (before all the additions) was £238, after everything was worked out over the phone and confirmed by paperwork it was ......... £233 (FC, 5 years NCB protected and all the legal cover malarky)

That's a very good quote, how old is your bike

I went with Carole Nash, did my 2008 GSA with £1000 worth of accessories (would NOT insure the sat nav even though its bolted on) 6yrs no claims £250 excess for £340 fully comp. The £1000 accessories was mainly for the panniers, I thought that was a fair quote but for you to get £4000 worth of accessories for less it seems you got a very good deal :drool

Mine's a 2008 GSA.....

And I have the SatNav covered as its fitted in a lockable Touratech mount so it's "fixed" to the bike, despite them first saying it couldn't be covered. I have it in writing too.

I have covered: Remus, Akra, Sargent seats, panniers, topbox, screen (Ztechnik), Zumo + accessories, additional lighting & mounting brackets, HiD's, horns, Mudsling and other stuff I can't remember. It was all itemised a year ago for BMW and I sent the same list to Carole Nash. It's funny how it all adds up when looking at replacement pricing. I valued the bike at 9K and roughly 4K for the rest.

When I got the paperwork back from them it stated the bike was not modified from standard. I called them and argued that it was and I wanted it in writing to say it was and what was covered. They said it was covered in their "notes" section on the computer and they couldn't do it on their normal system procedures so they had to send a separate letter to confirm all the mods were on the policy. So don't be put off when they say they can't do something - keep at it.

Thanks for the feedback

Will keep trying. Only reason I was thinking of changing was Carole Nash came in at £420.00 for renewal this year, a jump from £282.00 last year. Thought I would start doing some checks with other companies.

Well what is it then if its not an exhaust :P :JB

To the ill informed then yes it is just an exhaust.

Those that know better will appreciate the difference.

You obviously are a member of the former and would just buy any old pipe to stick on the bike thinking that just because it sounds louder it must be going faster:comfort

So you don't approve of mine then ? :augie

power gain exhaust

REMUS claim upto 5hp for de-cat headers,so power gained from standard fittment, non power gain = no extra charge.
Got my renewal from c.nash 2008 1200gs with 7yrs ncb ,bike valued at £9000,excess £250 annual fee of £228 :clap:clap:pullface:thumb2

Remus headers and exhaust are both factory fitted options for BMW bikes (ask Wapping, both his GS's were supplied that way).

BMW Motorad Insurance claims to insure all BMW approved extras (panniers etc) as part of their standard policy (or did last year when I renewed with them). I would take them to task if I were you.

If we are dick waving about insurance quotes: £79.99 fully comp including commuting. Just been sent through unsolicited by The Bike Insurer.

2004 GS, 9+ years NCB

Thanks

The underwriters have changed from NIG to someone I can't remember now for the BMW cover which is why mine went from £197 (two bikes plus 10% loading for extra accessories) to £290 and they wouldn't budge. Got a better policy/cover from Carole Nash at £233 all in.

Nigel
I've just renewed insurance.
I was with Carole Nash but they wanted £321 this year so looked around and found Bennetts were good value.
BMW wanted £600 (most expensive) and then I found a couple of really cheap quotes but I'd never heard of the companies so I went with what I thought was a decent deal with a reputable company.
Bennetts have have a list of extras cheap as a bundle i.e. breakdown, legal, personal cover and helmet/leathers all for about £75 with the discount.
They have a list of extras you can add such as exhaust, crash bars etc.

Anyway got the lot for £230 fully comp:thumb

At least another option for you to look at.

Bennets - Dirt Cheap. In my experience crap service! Need to speak to them and change anything, that'll be £25. Roll on July 10th and i will definately be moving to a different broker.

They are talking tosh. I had 1200GSA with Remus headers and Akro can insured with BMW Insurance no problem. Bike got nicked in Feb and they paid out for bike + accessories no problem.

Ring back and insist they talk to the underwriter (was NIG, now Allianz). My policy was with BMW/NIG but the BMW/Allianz policy is (i am told) identical.

They insured my accessories including Remus/Akra no problem but with a 10% loading on the price. Yes, the cover is identical with Allianz but the prices have gone up 60%. I was told Allianz are using the same pricing that NIG was going to use this year. Next year I will get them quote again as a new customer and see how that works.
