Five things you hate and five things you love about your R1300GS.

I agree. You do read some horseshit on this forum, don't you?
From the comments on here and from the number of GS/GSA’s you see around with aftermarket seats or the front of the seat set on high and the rear on low most folk seem to disagree. I fixed my 1200 with both an aftermarket seat & an AirHawk.

The standard seat on my 1150 has been fine from the off, I just added a sheepskin to make it very comfortable on those longer days.

I find the low seat on mine very comfortable.
My standard height comfort seat is fine too, in approaching 3 years I've had the bike never looked to change it or change angles, everyone is running a different seat H/M/L comfort/vs non comfort version and a different backside! Opinions are very subjective - mine is I prefer a slightly firmer seat over a spongey soft seat, and find it comfortable to ride all day with a break every 2/3 hours.

Name me a (modern) bike where you don't find riders have "improved" their seat?

If you go back to 1150 times when you say they made the last good seats there was nowhere near the options you have now, and so most made do, or spent a lot of money on the very limited choice. Plenty of 1150s with Sargent seats, and plenty of 1150s with reupholstered originals.

IMO BMW's last bikes with comfortable factory seats were probably the /7's and GS PD solo. They've put out varying degrees of discomfort since.

I should add in my experience it's been my experience with most motorcycles regardless of brand, the V85TT being an exception.

Engine is great. Pulls everywhere and very happy to rev. Like a cross between a GS and an XR.

Weather protection is better than any bike I’ve previously owned. I thought the electrically adjustable screen was a gimmick but is great for finding that sweet spot, particularly when it’s windy.

Brakes are solid, the rear especially so but undoubtedly due to linked braking.

Physical size is small - like an 800/900 - and I can feel a weight difference when trying to pedal the bike backwards up the slight slope on my drive. Much easier to handle.

ASA makes creeping along in traffic easier.

Dislikes:
Engine is physically very noisy and loud even with earplugs - but at least the drone is a bit higher in pitch.

Looks have grown on me a bit but I still think it’s fugly.

ASA - initial throttle engagement is a bit abrupt even in road mode, and small throttle opening/closure easily induce lurching. Not a patch on DCT. At least the gearshift is smoother than a quick shifter.

Price - eye watering!

Service costs - my last GS was £1300 for a 5 year service pack, this is £2400, and dealer quoted £300 for a first service. WTF??

I concur with your likes and dislikes Matty. Other than ASA, I've not ridden one with that.

The cost for service and parts on BMW motorcycles are simply obscene here however it's even worse on the cars.

Dealer did tell me the service plans have shot up in price. When I bought mine I took a 3 years service plan out for £700 (may have been some money knocked off). So ive now had 3 services done for that including just having the big valve one, brake fluid change, drive shaft check etc. All included. Just looked and at full price it's £1515 for 3 years now. Around doubled in price in just under 3 years - WTF! I suppose we have triumph and Ducati to blame for that and BMW are stepping into line?!

Why?

Speaking as a happy owner: Anything that hides the actual shape of these tubs of lard, has to be an improvement!
I agree the r1300gsa is no beauty queen…..
but that paint job looks terrible to me. Just looks like someone has thrown up over it.

I look forward to when my bike is out of warranty so I can do my own servicing again. (y)
