It had the bump I think... but nothing done with it.. think the bevel housing rests on it when down so assumed it was just for this.. but looks like they had plans for it all along. That said, I dont remember it being that big but I could be wrong

Took some more pictures , would be interesting to see the inside of the shaft at the bottom of that knobbly stopper thingy.

Look at Warlords earlier post.. dont think you can see it from the inside.. the final drive rests on it, that's why I used the circle boss thing on my last bike... you could drill this also...

It must be frustrating having these issues when many state that a chain-driven bike is a non-starter for them as they want the ease and low maintenance of shaft drive .

Not true, I am on my 5th 1200 GS since 2005, never had a problem with the shaft drive rusting or splines failing and I have ridden almost every day. On the other hand I have only done 5,500 miles on my chain driven 2017 Thruxton R and it requires constant maintenance.

So for a serious high mileage riders chains are a non starter.

Not true, I am on my 5th 1200 GS since 2005, never had a problem with the shaft drive rusting or splines failing and I have ridden almost every day. On the other hand I have only done 5,500 miles on my chain driven 2017 Thruxton R and it requires constant maintenance.

So for a serious high mileage riders chains are a non starter.

So ironic , given that you don’t know if there’s a problem with the supposedly maintenance-free shaft drive unless you open it up .
A chain requires very little maintenance but at least you can see a problem developing .

Ah well back to the drawing board, seems the video is the only way, all the swingarms are the same, and that knobbly thing is solid.

Agree and at the end of the day the only way water can get in is a torn or improperly connected boot at either the transmission or FD end of the swing arm.

I'm 75% sure I'm going down the hole drilling route.... I just can't see any other way.

I'll do it from the inside out though, as the shaft will need to be removed completely to get the optimal drain position (I suspect that circle nobble isn't it)....

I'll probably go with a 6mm (M6) size hole and refit everything. The hole will be primered and painted to prevent corosion and will remain untapped and open. At this point I don't think its so imperative to seal in the rubber boots, unless you want to.

Once I've got the best draining position, you lot can copy the external position and drill from the outside, saving the hassle of having to remove your shaft, and final drive housing.... If you want to copy mine.

I'd suggest you might want to let me test mine for a few thousand miles first to ensure the hole doesn't crack the shaft housing, or anything nasty.

My concern with the Russian video is he used quite a long threaded M5 bolt.... wheres all that thread going and how close is it now to moving parts !!
