Fork Stanchion Issue... some perspective?

That's a completely unrealistic request as I'm sure you know, but the fact that even one bike has developed the problem with only moderate on road use should be enough, together with the scale and expense of BMW's response, to convince anybody that there is an issue with the design and/or construction of this part.

BMW obviously fear that many more bikes will eventually suffer this problem without the program of remedial action they have now launched. If they believed that only a few bikes exposed to extreme off-road incidents have or will develop the problem, then I would not have expected the scale of the response, albeit it seems to have taken BMW a long time to come to this conclusion. Possibly it has taken them some time to negotiate a cost contribution from the fork suppliers.

Without some numbers and evidence, it's all speculation and hearsay - simples.

'The scale of the response' is caution - check all bikes and fix as appropriate, it really is that simple.

As I understand it, it is not check and fix as appropriate - they are applying the fix to all bikes, and the ones that show some separation are additionally being fitted with new fork tubes to which the fix will be applied, presumably on the basis that if a gap has developed then the existing tubes are already deformed and not safe to keep, even with the fix.

So, at the end of this process every bike sold since 2013 will have had a fix applied - quite a large scale and serious undertaking, and not one which I think BMW would undertake without good reason, though I suspect we will never hear the full details behind the decision to do this.

I was at my local dealers today, one of the corporate videos running was of some guy yomping a GS rallye round a motorcross track, getting the bike around 6 ft high over the jumps. That's why they have to supply a fix, just imagine showing that BMW corporate advertising video, to the jury in Texas who are dealing with the claim from the guy who still is in a Coma after his forks collapsed.

I have just bought a 1200gsa 66 plate with 2000 miles on the clock, should I get in touch with Riders of Cardiff and ask them to check the forks?

Most of the old farts on here still think Engineering means bashing lumps of metal and getting their finger nails dirty - no wonder we struggle to compete anymore.

Same folk probably thing a nail technician isn't a proper technician either. ;)

Yes if they haven’t had the collars fitted, but really there is fuck all to worry about unless the bike has been heavily used off road, even then chances are that there is nothing wrong - don’t take any notice of the old ladies on this site!

Just exactly what discipline of Engineering do you believe you belong to? What disciplines of engineering have you actually qualified in / worked in? Having come across your bizarre, ill informed posts on many occasions I cant wait to hear :)

Electronics - been doing it since I was 12. Most people haven’t got a clue what Electronics is, even though every aspect of their lives is affected by it.

You really are up your own arse! Just go back through some of the ill advice & bullshit you have posted on this site & try to understand why you are a laughingstock! Most Engineering types on here only comment on what they are qualified / experienced in, & have the humility to listen to / seek advice from those who know more than themselves on specialist subjects. Your comments & advice, at times have been borderline dangerous to others unaware of your Engineering ineptitude

I don’t give a stuff what people think, I know what I know and will offer my opinions and advice as I see fit, so crawl back into the hole you came out of my good chap.

Caveat- if you have any doubts about your bike take it to your dealer.

And back to the OP.

But interestingly my local dealer ( Chester) hasn't got the tool to repair and if it needs the mod, can't allow you to take it home

Funny you should say that...my riding buddy goes to Chester and they've just removed the rubber sleeves and told him the bits are on order...

Conversely....

my 24K mile 64 plate that has recently been used offroad, bushes fitted as apparently there was a gap that couldn't be corrected....they were saying something about replacing the stanchion...was in a rush so didnt really query it...
Had no problems with Williams in Manchester as booked in 2 weeks in advance...no issue with parts.

Good this is a technical forum.

You could have fooled me with some of the codswallop thats posted.

It’s an Internet forum so don’t expect too much :)

My April 2015 LC TE has now done almost 30,000 miles of 95% road use - when the fork hullabaloo kicked off, I pushed back the rubbers that cover the joint in question and gave them a good visual and physical inspection, they looked good and solid with zero gap - it was clear from all the evidence and BMWs recall info that in the vast majority of cases there was no issue. I carried on riding my bike day in and day out (with a weekly inspection) with no worries including a two up Picos de Europa trip with no dramas and the fork joint was clearly still good afterwards.

A couple of weeks ago I needed to to go to my dealer about another unrelated issue - the excellent Balderston by the way - and they said that they now had a stock of the collars and fitted them while I waited, excellent service :).

Too many people were making far too much of a drama about this whole thing, but that unfortunately is one of the downsides of bike forums.

Are the forks being modified on pre LC telelever bikes?
