Front brake mystery

Either there's play or not. And we both agree there is, but you reckon you shouldn't be able to 'feel' it.

There is only one answer, i must be stronger than you :aidan

Bugger!

I replaced my discs, pads, bolts, bobbins, wavy washers last year as it was time and there was also play in both front discs (you could move the them slightly forward and backwards by hand).

After the addition of the new parts the play went. This week I noticed when braking hard, I felt a slight...how can I describe it...clunk.
Seems the play on one of the discs is back. I tried tightening the bolts this weekend whilst doing some other works on the bike and I couldn't (didn't want to) tighten any further. They are all definitely torqued up to correct level.
Now I'm confused if I got all the right parts or in fact what the (returned) problem is.
Discs and parts all purchased from James Sherlocks .

If you have linked brakes? could the 'dunk' be coming from the rear ABS when braking hard as mine sometimes does when the rear wheel skips a little when braking 'enthusiastically'?
Otherwise, :nenau

I have explained.. You shouldn't be able to feel any play. The discs aren't fixed absolutely solid but you shouldn't be able to feel any play by hand. Just because both your bikes had discernable play doesn't mean that's how they should be.
They aren't like that from new so why should they be like it later in life.
The same applies to the 1100/1150 and 1200 models.

I can get 'play' but only when the wheel is off (no disc brakes to support anything) but only when I really squeeze the disc into the wavy washers so that's understandable...there's no rotational play whatsoever.

If there was 'rotational' play then that would not be good. But pulling/pulling perpendicular to the disc does reveal some movement. But you've gotta be strong to feel it (Steptoe's gonna shoot me now!)

I do have linked brakes BUT I can move one of the front discs very slightly by hand which was one of the original reasons for replace all the wearing parts last year as I had the same symptoms. The other disc I can't move at all as per Steptoe's remark.
Just seems odd that with all new parts and one side moving and the other not, what the issue is?

When it is all assembled the wavy washers should not be compressed flat, if they are there is something wrong and they wont allow the disk to move when pressed. A 25-30 thou feeler should be able to be fitted in the space the "wave " makes. As the washer is wavy its difficult without using feeler wire to be exact as the real space will be somewhat larger.

Pressing the disk will flatten the washer and the disk will move, you can do this by hand but there will be some resistance. My 05 GSA has the ABS ring mounted beneath the disk and only has the bobbin and the wavy washer. The movement allows alignment when the brake is applied, that's why they are called semi floating disks.

The washer part no 4 in the diagram may well be used if an ABS ring is not fitted, either to protect the alloy or make the disk position exact. I admit not knowing about the earlier non servo abs ring. The offside does not have the abs ring or a washer though.

The holes in the disk can wear allowing the disk to move in a rotational manner when the brake is applied, new bobbins may make the situation better and they can wear as well as the disk. new disk and bobbins would be the correct action. Its no unusual to find the wavy washers break in use, they should be replaced as soon as they are spotted.
