HI guys new to the fourm looks intresting, I bought a very low milage GS 09 reccently and love it however I have a couple of questions for you GS riders. I have noticed a low speed pulse from the front brake it feels like the rotor my be suspect is there any known problem here, the bike is not fitted with ABS system and has coverd 5k miles.
occasinally I get a pop in the silencer/cat on the overrun the bike has a standerd can is this normal?

vince.

Warped disc/s maybe ??

I think this is a known problem (I certainly had it on my 07 GSA after 2 years and were replaced under warranty)...........but wait for far more knowledgable people on such things to come along and comment before taking any action :)

Start with the simplest, first. When was the bike last serviced? Is the front tyre up to snatch and correctly inflated?

Warped disk* (most likely)? Sticking pad? Callipers need a clean up / are they bolted on properly?

Outside chance, a mildly buckled rim?

But start with the simple things first, whatever you do.

Yes, quite normal, pops and poops.

*I had two on an SP1 in very short order, so mileage is no 100% reliable measure.

Sounds like warped discs or disc. Had it on mine, that too was an 09 but any disc on any bike can warp. What was noticeable on mine was that when they changed them under warranty the new discs had a Brembo logo stamped on them, the originals didn't. I have noticed that new bikes again have Brembo discs on them ,so perhaps it was a costcutting measure on the 09 model. Your local dealer will measure the discs and tell you if there within tolerance. You will have to replace Pads too if that is found to be the problem.

Hi all the bike has supposedly been serviced by Lings motorcycles a none BMW dealer... before i took delivery.
I should not be negative but experience of dealers has been mostly bad over the years which is why i tend to service my own bikes.
I Don't think the warping if it is that is very bad, it is just under light braking at low speeds.
I will probably strip them out and check them soon now before i do anything more it may be sticking somware.

thanks for the advice.

One last thing can you buy a BMW warantee on a 09 bike and is it worth it...

In my experience of warped discs (if that is what yours is) then it ONLY manifested itself at low speeds and light braking............anything else it was fine. Mine made it nearly impossible to come to a halt with any degree of accuracy.

I had a smiler (! Lion's auto-suggest)experience with low speed breaking; resolved by the replacing the front pads with new Platinum Pads from Steptoe.

The discs lasted 87K (but I'm light on brake usage) until the bike was written off.

Warped Disc

Does sound like you have warped discs, I have the same symptoms on my ZZR1400 i.e pulsing when breaking lightly. This a known problem with the ZZR I first noticed it at around 7000 miles however it has just passed the MOT with an advisory therefore as long as it does not get worse I will leave alone until the next MOT.
To all those that believe that BMW bikes are the only ones to have problems, I have had issues with all of the Japanese bikes that I have owned the highest mileage covered on an individual bike being 35000. I currently have 60000 on my GS 1100 and up to now it has been the most trouble free bike that I have owned :)

I had warped front discs replaced after 9000 miles under warranty. Same low speed pulsing symptoms. My first thoughts were that the warping may have occurred during spirited throttle/ brake riding in the heat in the Picos mountains then I recalled the fact that I had new tyres fitted immediately prior to setting off on the trip. Now I wonder if the slight run out on the discs may have been caused by the tyre fitter being careless and heavy handed when breaking the beads by hand.

Just a thought for those who have experienced warped discs - have you had tyres changed just prior to the symptoms occurring?:nenau

I had the same problem with an aprilia falco, i think it was a duff batch of brambo rotors because many other owners had the same problem with my reg bike. The bike covered more than 40k with no other problems at all if you discount a weak side stand.

before you go changing disc's try and use brake cleaner on them this will get rid of the deposits on them which a lot of the time is the problem.
the deposits can give the symptons of a warped disc and are caused by holding the brakes on when hot.
