Just received a letter from the dealer about a recall to replace a seal in the fuel pump (0000163300).

My bike was in just a few weeks ago for the battery software upgrade. Just wondering if BMW release these recalls on regular basis during the quieter winter months to improve the customer/dealer relationship ? Maybe its just a marketing ploy to get customers through the door !

Brilliant marketing ploy.....

Dear Sir, your more-expensive-than-anyone-elses bike is fecked again. Please come into the dealers so we can try and sell you another really really expensive bike while you're still pissed at taking yet another day off work due to our repeated cock ups.

Yours,

BMW

:D

Conveniently, its also another 'half hour' while you wait job. They must think that half an hour is just enough time for their salesmen to sell you a GSA.

'It'll be much more reliable than the GS, Sir, unless of course BM release another new bike the following year so we may see some recalls during the winter months again'.

Actually, that was ment as a humourous take on the first post.

As an engineer, I fully understand that there is a certain level of consumer testing involved in any new product (admittedly there is perhaps a tad more with a completely re-designed motorbike). That's why I waited a year and a half before I bought my absolutely perfect 1200 :thumb

There have been 4 official safety recalls since the beginning of 2005. If yours is "water ingress past O ring seal" then it was first registered in February. If it is "leak in fuel system" then registered in April.

This is from the govt vosa database - knowing the efficiency of the civil service,
your BMW dealer probably had the info many months earlier.

Serious Comment About Problem...Honest!!!

I recently had the gearbox seal failure (documented elsewhere) repaired, at the time of the work being done I mentioned a problem with a smell of petrol from the bike when parked in my garage (also documented elsewhere!). The dealer couldnt find an obvious problem so he replaced my tank with their demonstrators tank.....
My point being that I wonder if this is a potential sympton and what age your bike, ie could this have been cleared up on the latest bikes?

Not sure whether you can bank on the bikes leaving the factory with earlier problems sorted. For example mine left the factory in January 05,it had the new (turquoise ) fuel pump seal but it still allowed water ingress.I wonder if there are more than one master press/mould for these plastic parts and some of them are not quite right?
