There was a thread on here about points/locations disappearing in the later versions of City Navigator Europe... but it seems to have gone AWOL or I just cant find it.

Anyway, I have been a bit pissed off that my village no longer has a "point" on the map as of CN-EU 2009, (2010 is the same). Many other villages or hamlets have also been reduced to a name alongside a road and no point marker. This means you cant route to it unless you find where it is and make your own waypoint.

In reply to emails, Garmin said it was Navteq's fault as they supplied the map data and Garmin write their software to utilise it.

Several emails later, I have the following mail from Navteq: From what we understand, the places you describe as missing are present on the Navteq database but not marked on the screen displayed to you. Navteq is the map database supplier for your device. However, the route calculation and they way this information is displayed to you is system software related. As we do not supply the system software, we would advise that you contact Garmin directly about this issue.

In these 2 pictures, you can see what I mean about missing points... and this is quite a small area - 1km resolution:

CNEU2008

CNEU2009

So, I guess its back to Garmin with more ammunition.

Anyone else notice places being dropped?

I've heard it's something to do with duplicate place names and a problem that first came to a head in the USA.

Apparently, a number of yanks were using their GPS and mapping as autopilots rather than navigational aids and ending up in the "wrong" duplicated place name, then phoning up Garmin and giving them a right ear bashing.

The response from Garmin seems to have been to "un-point" many smaller locations where place name duplication is more likely, thus handicapping the intelligent GPS user in order to assist the numpty "I go anywhere that the GPS says" brigade.

The above is based on some postings on the Zumo forum and the experience of one particular chap who has been in direct contact with Garmin.

Sounds like your idea of pointing more ammo at Garmin is a good one.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Just got a mail back from Garmin Cartography Mailbox, with the following:

Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. I just did some more checking on this, and after some discussions with our Automotive Cartography Manager, I was informed that these points were removed from the product due to size issues. I have passed along your concern and I was assured that this topic would be reevaluated prior to our October release. While I cannot guarantee that these points will be added back in, they are aware of the effect it has had on you which will hopefully be enough to sway them to add them back.

I suggest everyone else complains of missing points:thumb
