02 GSA 106K miles.

About 2-3 months ago I noticed at the beginning of a ride that once in 3rd gear it didn't respond to down shifting to 2nd. The gear lever pushed down with what felt like the normal travel distance but no click feeling into the gear. It continued to happen within the 3-5 gear and after about 10 minutes or so all was well.

This morning, some 6k miles later, the same thing happened at the beginning of a ride only this time it took longer to correct itself. I could go up to 6th but in order to come down to 2nd ( or find neutral or 1st) I had to stop, turn the bike off...rocked it back and forth gently in gear and play around with the clutch lever.

Again, it did correct itself and on the way home it was perfect. I replaced the clutch slave 12 months ago and there is no sign of weeping from it now, the clutch is not slipping and the fluid is fine.

I changed the trans fluid this spring and checked the level which is fine. The shifter linkage is tight and the two ball fittings are clean and lubed.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.. :nenau

You should check the gear lever assembly. It gets gummed up with crud. It's very easy to disassemble and reassemble. Clean and grease it all and see how you get on!

Not sure if this is what you mean by cleaning the linkage but. If you haven't done it already, try removing the lever from it's mounting behind the footpeg, cleaning and greasing the pivot. Only takes 5 minutes.

The allen bolt holding this on is put on with locktight so heat the housing up before unscrewing it.

Shifter Lever

Ok, I'll heat that bolt up and r/r cleaning and lubing. It's a bit of a head scratcher why it's only happened twice with a 2-3 month gap in between. First thing in morning both times too.

Well after heating that allen bolt up it did manage to loosen but I had to use the socket to unscrew it all the way. The SS inner bushing then had to be removed with the shifter in a vice and use a small socket as a drift pin to knock it out....again it didn't come out easily.

As predicted everything was pretty dirty so I used a round file for the interior of the bushing and then some 1k grit paper on the outside. After the cleaning and applying new grease that bushing slid back into the shifter housing using just my fingers! :eek Bad dirt!

So after a test ride the shifting was seamless...and as others have found, it was much easier, a noticeable change. Time will tell if that was the problem shifting but I'm now optimistic.

Thanks guys :clap
