Off on a trip 2nd week in October, and aim to go to Gerardmer. I appreciate weather is always a bit of a lottery, but any experience of general weather conditions around early to mid october would be welcome. Also, any recommendations for hotels.

Try Logis de France, more often than not reasonably OK.

Stayed in Gerardmer a couple of times. Didn't book in advance, found reasonable hotels easily enough both times (once in May, once in September). Can't help with weather in October, but there are some lovely roads in the Vosges. The Route des Cretes is great. Look here for more details. And I've got photos of my bike at Col de la Schluct from four different summer trips.

Go there and back via the Ardennes, and you'll only need a couple of hour sn the Autoroute each way (unless tiem is o fthe essence, in which case blast down. The road from Luneville to Gerardmer via Rambervillers is nice and fast and sweepy

I stayed in Gerardmer for a stopover night en route for switzerland last year. There's a very nice Logis de france hotel overlooking the lake, they have a private secure car park at the rear, Hotel Beau-Rivage.

Thanks Robin and Fatal, much appreciated. Actually, had already been looking at the Beau-Rivage, sounds ideal. Went through Gerardmer early in the year, as you say guys, fantastic roads, and put it on my list of places to stay. Just have to keep my fingers crossed about the weather.

I stayed at the Beau-Rivage and had a lovely large clean room for about 50 Euros i think.
I can't remember the name but there's an excellent beer bar next to the small junction at the start of the one way system. Otherwise night life in October will be pretty non-existent i would think. Weather wise probably coldish and wettish so watch out for those greasy bends as there's lots of them. Have fun.

Only place we got a soaking two weeks ago, nextday was lovely weather very changeable this time of year. Stayed in a four star hotel outside Gerardmer wont go back, but a B&B in Clarfontaine up the road a bit was excellant. Great roads as the maps show but very quite this time of year.
Eifel and Baden Baden area for me if i can get away in the next few weeks.
Dont book easy to find accommadation.

We moved!

"Just have to keep my fingers crossed about the weather." That sums up the Vosges (my daughter was born in St.Dié) and why we don't live there now! Bear in mind that there is a very big difference between the Vosges and Alsace although they are neighbours. Generally Alsace has more sunshine than the Vosges and the wines are excellent - I have a glass almost EVERY day!
You will find the roads "interesting" and not much traffic BUT look out for speed limits -particularly 50 (30mph) in towns and villages whether it is marked or not; The people are quite different too. remember that Alsace was French/German/French/German/French so most people speak the two languages; Don't expect anyone to speak English unless you bump into my brother-in-law!

Was there a couple of years ago, luckily during a summer heatwave.

I recon Colmar or Saverne are nicer, but absolutely crackin' roads all round. Stop of at Verdun on the way down.

St.Dié

The town looks very pleasant in your photo, Roy. My wife had a very nice flat on the griound floor in the second block along the Quai Jeanne d'Arc (riverside in your picture) The pedestrian bridge, fountain and 'spuced up' bridge are all new.
The town used to have huge traffic problems with lorries through the town. these were much reduced when the tunnel at Selestat was constructed - but unfortunately it did not conform to the tunnel safety regulations brought in after the Mt.Blanc tunnel fire and it was closed; After much discussion I understand that another tunnel is to be built but I am not sure when it will open.
