What do you think the going rate is for a Monolever bottom end with unknown history these days ?

Trying to do a deal on this lump. Comes with engine covers but nothing else.

eBay pricing suggest £200-£400 dependent on condition and completeness

I'd be looking to do a private deal under well under that pricing

I’m hoping to be around £200 or so for the bottom end as pictured plus starter motor, diode board, engine covers and the cylinder studs.

The story is, it was bought as a spare and has been in his garage for years - original bike long gone. He’s clearing the garage pending a house move.

I’m haggling hard but the deal’s not done yet

Keep haggling Pete…. You’ll get it

Deal done

Could resist a little strippage after work.

Engine covers off

Breather covers off

Oil pump cover off

Lifters removed

It looks ok inside but absolutely filthy from sitting uncovered under a workbench

The clean up and refurb began in earnest today.

The oil filter tube is the long type fitted with oil coolers and needed to be removed.

What an absolute mission to get it out - likely Loctited in at the factory ?

I used heat and a drag link socket with the windy gun turned up to max

The end of the filter tube got damaged during removal but it’s off !

Lots of parts degreasing and cleaning.

Oil pump and housing looks good and measured up well within spec.

The engine is going to have to be completely stripped to clean the inside of the crankcase.

It’s filthy in there.

Just an hour this morning got the cam out.

Before

And after

And the breathers under the starter motor cover

And after

Just the crank to remove now - so I can clean the crankcase inside and out.

Job for another day though

The engine is now fully stripped and ready for cleaning

Just to give you a flavour of the grime inside..

IMG_3258.jpeg

Crankshaft was covered in filth that fortunately just wiped off

Cleaned the crankcase today.

For contrast to earlier photos..

It’s cleaned up quite nicely after a wire brush and jet wash treatment.

Initial dry with an air line then a warm in the sun to finish it off.

Bit more work today.

Put a new short oil filter guide tube in..
(Won’t be using an oil cooler)

IMG_3292.jpeg

Followed by crankshaft and camshaft which had been cooling off in the freezer..

IMG_3290.jpeg

Oil pump installed. Packed with a good dose of assembley lube and learning from a previous mistake,100% sure I used the correct ‘O’ ring this time. New rear main seal installed..

IMG_3293.jpeg

And finally, fitted the flywheel with new mounting bolts..

IMG_3294.jpeg

That’s it for this week.

Little bit of progress on this engine.

New timing chain etc fitted

IMG_3349.jpeg

Covers refitted..

You can just about make out the sump under the engine, which will hopefully go on this weekend (after cleaning) I’ve gone for a G/S style shallow sump with the mounting points for a bash plate. (Oil pick up and dip stick to match)

I think the engine covers are too cosmetically shabby to use.

I’m going to send them away for powder coating.

I’ve still got a starter motor and alternator to clean and refurb to keep me busy.

I’ll have another look to check 👍

I took the fitment advice from Steve Scrimingers book which if I recall correctly says something along the lines of - the guide should slightly deflect the chain to stop it whipping.

It’s an easy tweak at the moment 😉
