Got a few questions about my new 1200GS

Especially Snerkler :augie

I`m almost torn between thanking him and publicly declaring him UKGSer prime Poisson d`Avril........but there`s really no choice is there?
He`s definately fishy. :D :D
Thanks Snerkler, you made it all worthwhile. :beerjug:

It`s past noon,now,so the fun has to stop................ ;)

You're welcome :beerjug:

I like to join in. Believe it or not as was aware of the April fools thing, but to be honest they are the sort of questions I would ask (well maybe not quite so bad) and so well aware the post was aimed at folk like me so thought it only fair to answer the questions for some other numpty's like myself :pullface

Thought as much :thumb2

You'll have to forgive the ludite; the sabre like wit and repartee of the 1200 section is far too erudite and subtle for him :P

Re tax disc.

I have machined a 16mm (outer diameter) x 7.5mm long spacer with a 8mm clearance hole thro it in stainless steel. With a 40mm long M8 stainless allen screw/bolt it will mount to the upper brake caliper hole (sits in the recess) so the tax disc will sit just off it.

Ignore the jibes; most forums have members who take pleasure from their own insecurities.

I'm not so sure FF. It's much easier on a bike which has hype wangled cammets. On these big boxers I prefer to undo the interlocking dreel sprale and mount the disc on the fully inverted overhead underhangs.:D

Getting on is quite simple. Take a flying leapfrog from the rear, with practice you won't break your legs on panniers. Slip it into first, rev it high and it will soar off the centre stand as soon as you slip it into gear :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1

As for getting it on the centre stand, surely your butler can do that for you. Alternatively you could fit a reverse gear and then just reverse the mounting procedure above :augie :augie :augie

... now i am worried;

How do you mount an insecure member?

Do i really want/need to know?
Should i ask in Heels On Wheels Section?

I know exactly where that photo was taken.....far beyond 'some' Ural riders horizon:D

Did you order the right hand drive conversion kit ? - you'll need it if you take to France. It comes with a free air freshener.

Getting on and off the bike:- Side stand as it will sit lower and make life a whole lot easier. You get used to lifting it up off the side stand very quickly.

Helmet:- Try it without the peak and see what you think. In theory the peak will casue more drag at high speeds and make it more uncomfortable. Also try fitting a screen spoiler.

Tax disc holder:- Didn't you have one on your bike already, and therefore can't you just put it in the same place? Here's mine
IMAG0192-1-1.jpg

Service costs:- Depends on your dealer and what you need doing. 1st service cost me £130, but others I beleive have paid over £200

Running costs:- A lot depends on how you ride. I cmooute through Sheffield which is very hilly, and stop start all the time. Still gettin about 42mpg. Oil usage on my bike is high though. Advised by BMW dealer to use 20-50 semi synthetic

Is it reliable? As reliable as any other bike imo, despite what a lot write on here. The older generation weren't too reliable but a lot of issues have been fixed.

And yes I'm fully aware this is probably a piss take, but ya never know some might actually find the answers useful

***I'm fully aware this is probably a piss take***

Tarks takin the P155, I i i i i i i don't think so:augie

You have failed to ask the most important questions........
Should you keep the origional screen, buy a lip, swop it for a tinted one, take it off altogether........and........
How does one prevent bufferting?...........:blast.
Don't start the engine and sit on it in the garage.

I am sure there are threads on all these subjects:augie

I wonder if one of the more pertinent questions is should I even ride the R1200GS once I've got the bike home (delivered by van of course), bearing in mind depreciation, paint finish, along with all the previously mentioned issuettes.

I'm coming round to the idea of keeping the bike in the garage until the next version of the GS comes out then do 'a deal' on a trade-in. Hopefully by then the issues will be resolved.

Well,it`s a beautiful morning after yesterday`s atrocious weather on my birthday, and I`m glad I waited until today to pick up my brand new 1200GS ADV.
I got all the blingola as prezzies.....new carbon fibre look hugger, brand new Zumo, sheepskin seat cover and external oil and water bottles to bolt onto my panniers.
I also got a Haynes manual but I don`t think I`ll bother reading it.

Now then,some questions....

I`ve recently bought a matching latest version so called 'Twat Suit'
But why are they called that ??

I also bought a brand new Tour-X that I found isn`t very comfortable at high speed.
Should I wear it with the peak or without it ?

The bike is very big and heavy.
What is the best way to get on and off it?
On the centre stand or off it?

I spent a sleepless night last night...not because I`m so excited, but because I couldn`t think of anywhere to mount my new anodised tax disc holder.
Does anyone have any ideas of where to mount the tax disc holder...or maybe show me a picture ?

What sort of service costs and running costs can I expect ?

Is the bike likely to be reliable....?
I wouldn`t like to be stranded somewhere with a corroded front engine casing or a weep of oil from my rocker cover gasket or anything.

Hope you can help, and don`t mind my questions,it`s just all so different from my previous VFR and my GSXR.
But what a machine...it`s top of the range and fully loaded with AHD,TDC,BDC,sense of humour bypass and chip on the shoulder.

Answers...:ronno

Twat suit is self explanatory, good word eh!

Tour X....whatever...

Ref getting your leg over, please see my earlier post "From which side does one mount?" with indepth answers, even when running at bike from behind!

Anodised tax disc holder, Chav.......

Service costs, DIY it's cheaper.......running costs.... syphon fuel from your car......But if its a TDCI don't, as it will eventually knacker your thingies!

Reliability Engine cases should last for at least 3 months before they wear out. I've found it's best not to use it too much....weeping oil...use an old hanky, not a cotton one though, see Polly Esta's post!

Chip on shoulder This is dependant on what type of potato was used, crinkle, fat, straight or oven chips, and the most important issue...which shoulder...

No doubt someone will tell you the right shoulder is best, but in the handbook it says drive on the left in this country..

I do hope this reply has been of some use to someone!! :augie
