Grip Puppies for GS1200?

Takes the cheap option.

1. put 2 psi extra in the rear tyres
2. put 2 - 5 turns on the big back suspension knob under your right hand thigh.(preload)
3. sit about 2 to 3 inches back in your seat to put a bit more weight in your wrists.

If that fails, get the bike serviced and have the vibration 'lumps' dialed out by throttle body adjustments.

Hope this helps...

Ian.

I`ve got gp`s on my 12 and I think they`re good :thumb2 No problems with the heat coming through. They took a little getting used to and I found my hands ached a little but they`re ok now :thumb2 For about £15 they`re worth a go :D

I put GPs on my 1200GS. Like Big Lee, my hands ached for a while, but once I got used to them I found them a big improvement over the originals - no more cramp after a few hundred miles. Heat takes a little longer to get through, but is absolutely fine.

more grip?

I was wondering, are the grip puppies very grippy? My standard grips are getting quite smooth and its sometimes hard to grip the throttle especially with my heated gloves on. If these offer more or a purchase on the handlebars they might be a cheap solution. Also which size fits teh 1200GS??

Standard is the size you need for a GS1200........I have a set on my GSA1200and was surprised that I required standard over the large.....I questioned it with the supplier and he was right (unsurprisingly).

Waste of money

I fitted them on my 12GS before a trip to Scotland. Cut them off after the first day as they made my hands ache badly. I think they made the grips just too thick for my dainty hands.

Strange to hear people say they made their hands ache? Mine ache with the standard grips and the only reason I'm considering these grip puppies is to reduce hand fatigue. Those of you who had aching hands since fitting the grip puppies - were your hands aching before?

Nope. The only reason I fitted them was (in my mind) to preserve the oe grips.

No, but I`m used to them now :thumb2 It`s just something different to adjust to

For years I have suffered from mild CTS in my right hand that makes my thumb and first two fingers numb and tingle - a bit like pins and needles. It happens on the bike and when gripping things such as a fly-rod or when holding a book in one hand. I can get rid of it quite quickly on the bike by stretching my fingers and thumb and rolling my right shoulder, some days it's better than others.
I fitted a pair of Grip Puppies to see if they would help and they do. The increased diameter takes a bit of getting used to - only a few miles - but helps to relieve the dreaded CTS. Heated grips still work OK.

I got the operation for CTS done last year. What a difference it has made. :bounce1 Get on to your Doc and stress the bike riding angle (throttle and braking control are compromised = not terribly safe) to get the ball rolling.

I have veered away from consulting the GP as I thought that the operation was a bit hit and miss in terms of outcome - I work around the issue and it hasn't got any worse over the last 5-years.

How long does it take to recover?

I fitted a pair yesterday and I'm well pleased with the results. My 2008 GSA has the skinniest grips of all the bikes I've owned and I'm convinced this is the root cause of my aching throttle hand / thumb. Time will tell if it's the right solution.

I picked up some tips from previous posts about fitting Grip Puppies and can report.....

1. You definately need the 'Small' size - my OE grips measured up at 1.25" which is almost an exact match
2. A smear of KY jelly or similar at both ends (no pun intended!) of the GPs does the job. Water soluable and easy to remove excess.
3. Although they appear to be about a centimetre too long, don't cut them - they are an exact fit when pushed onto the OE grips.
4. Takes less than 10 minutes to fit both. They look ace too.

Good luck

I had both my wrists done, left wrist in December 2004 and the right wrist 6 months later. Both were done under local anaesthetic and the operation took 15 minutes. The recovery time was about 2 weeks. It worked for me and I have had no more tingles since.

I can only take what Bob has said as I had an operation for a detatched ligament on my thumb on the same hand at the same time. That took a bit longer to heal. :bluesn2s
However, as already stated, the result has been brilliant. My sis-in-law has also had both her wrists done for CTS with the same great results. I haven't heard of anyone who has been made worse off. :comfort

Can you post a photo please?

Hi Paul,

Aplogies for the delay - I've just seen your message. Here's a couple of shots. Points to note....

1. They are black - the flash photography makes them look grey.

2. The left grip has a PTT button for a radio and that's the reason there's a tie wrap on the grip.

3. The handguards are not standard - they're the optional 'High' versions.

Personally I like the end cushion effect that's achieved by not cutting the puppies to the exact OE grip size. It's about a 8-10mm difference

Hope this helps

Howard
