What about posting gear ratios for each box? That shall clear up the confusion. ;-)
1150GSA transmission. Notice the shorter 1st and 6th gears.
1150GS transmision ratios
1150RT transmission ratios. Numbers found have been rounded up but are essentially similar to the 1150 GS transmision ratios. Info was found here :
http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/2004/bmw/r/1150_rt/specifications/544/05/transmission.html
Notice that the transmission is identified as having an
overdrive 6th gear. Most likely what many people call an
economy tranny. As for the "E" vs "6" in the RID, I am not familiar with it as I never rode an RT. BTW It seems the RT-P (police pack) has the same transmission as the Adventure with the lower 1st and 6th.
1 st gear - 2.05
2nd gear - 1.6
3rd gear - 1.27
4th gear - 1.04
5th gear - 0.9
6th gear - 0.7
Now. If somebody could post numbers for that "economy" transmission, that would end the debate. ;-)
Also, I have a 2006 1150GSA SE and it has the shorter 1st and 6th gear. Great gearings BTW except when you ride a long haul and wished for a 7th gear. I am actually back from a 7,500km ride throughout the US to visit Louisiana and Mississippi (did the Blues Trail) and when I was on the highway, I definitely wished I had that taller 6th gear. But when I was doing backroads, the shorter "enduro" 6th gear was superb. I have a few spare trannies and will maybe take a weekend to do a swap during the long winter. BTW That shorter 6th really makes sense on backroads and dirt roads. A month ago, I did 400km of gravel roads, standing on my pegs, cruising on that shorter 6th gear. I couldn't have done it with a regular tranny. 5th gear would have been to short, and 6th... too tall. But as I am retiring the GSA from off-road duty (I also have a 650 Africa Twin for that), I will now use the GSA for mile muching on long hauls. The longer 6th gear makes sense then. ;-) My 1200KRS will stay put under the tarp in the garage's corner... ;-)
